The Central Weather Bureau today issued a global alert on extreme heat, with high-temperature warnings activated for 14 counties and cities, including Greater Taipei, where temperatures may exceed 36°C. Additionally, meteorologist Wu Derong stated that a tropical disturbance east of the Philippines is rapidly intensifying and is highly likely to develop into this year's new typhoon, 'Nangka.' It is expected to pass through the Bashi Strait from the evening of the 24th to the 25th. For the coming week, there is a high chance of afternoon rainfall almost daily, with tropical moisture affecting Taiwan until the 29th. Southern and eastern regions will experience significant rainfall due to outer cloud bands, and the public is advised to exercise caution when planning outdoor weekend activities.

Taiwan Turns Into an Oven! High-Temperature Warnings Issued for 14 Counties and Cities

The Central Weather Bureau noted that due to a slight strengthening of the Pacific high-pressure system, daytime weather across Taiwan will be hot and sunny, with high UV index levels. The public is urged to take sun protection measures and stay hydrated to prevent heat-related illnesses before any rainfall occurs.

According to the high-temperature information released today by the Central Weather Bureau, daytime temperatures will be extremely hot across the island. Orange alerts have been issued for New Taipei City, Taoyuan City, Taichung City, Changhua County, Nantou County, Yunlin County, Chiayi City, Chiayi County, Tainan City, Kaohsiung City, Pingtung County, and Hualien County, where temperatures may consecutively reach 36°C. Yellow alerts are in effect for Taipei City and Taitung County, warning of temperatures exceeding 36°C.

Wu Derong, adjunct associate professor in the Department of Atmospheric Sciences at Central University, analyzed in his 'Leak the Heavens Classroom' column that the latest European model simulations show a tropical disturbance developing east of the Philippines over the next two days, with a high probability of evolving into Typhoon 'Nangka.'

Evening of the 24th to the 25th (closest approach to Taiwan): The typhoon is expected to pass through the Bashi Strait before moving toward Hong Kong, Macau, and Guangdong. Affected by its outer cloud bands, rainfall will expand in scope and intensity in eastern and southern regions.

27th to 29th: Influenced by southerly winds and residual moisture from the tropical system, localized rainfall will persist in southern Taiwan, with strong convective development possible across the island in the afternoons.

The weather fan page 'Taiwan Typhoon Forum | Weather Emergency' noted that while the probability of a direct landfall in Taiwan remains low, the typhoon will come closest between the 24th and 25th. Hualien-Taitung and Kaoping regions will experience showers. If the typhoon's path shifts northward closer to Taiwan than expected, the rainfall area could expand further. Additionally, western regions, located on the leeward side, must remain vigilant for extreme heat caused by subsidence warming.

One-Week Weather Outlook: Hot and Sunny Initially, Thunderstorms by Weekend

Wu Derong pointed out that prior to the approach of the tropical system, from now until the 24th, weakened southwest winds and reduced southern moisture will keep most areas hot and sunny, with afternoon thunderstorms mainly confined to mountainous areas. As the outer cloud bands of the tropical system approach from the evening of the 24th, moisture will flow in, altering weather conditions. Those planning trips to eastern Taiwan or southern mountainous areas are advised to carry rain gear and closely monitor the latest typhoon updates.
