The Kaohsiung Public Library continues to deepen its support for original picture book creation, announcing another success. The award-winning work from the third 'Good芽 Award,' titled 'Worries Brought by the Wind / Expectations in the Wind,' has been officially published and recently launched at a book-sharing event. Facilitated by the Kaohsiung Public Library, the book was co-published with Lianjing Publishing, featuring a dual-cover, dual-narrative design that allows readers to experience the story’s emotions from two different character perspectives. This achievement makes author Wang Sichun the first representative creator in the 'Good芽' program to progress from a workshop participant to an award winner and now a published author.
Dual-Cover, Dual-Narrative Depicts Waiting and Communication: Kaohsiung Public Library Nurtures Taiwan's Original Picture Book Talent
Kaohsiung Public Library Director Li Jin-oung stated that since 2019, the library has promoted the 'Good芽' picture book talent development program, cultivating original creators in Taiwan through workshops and award competitions. Wang Sichun’s journey—from workshop attendee to award recipient to published author—fully demonstrates the program’s success and marks a significant milestone.
'Worries Brought by the Wind / Expectations in the Wind' centers on the theme of 'writing letters,' following two parallel storylines featuring a raccoon and a bird named Ubi. It portrays the anxiety, misunderstandings, and anticipation involved in sending, waiting for, and receiving replies to letters. Wang shared that the inspiration came from personal emotional experiences, aiming to use anthropomorphized animals and dual narratives to help readers understand different perspectives, fostering empathy and communication.
At the book launch event, Wang shared her creative journey and led participants of all ages in a hands-on 'Leaf Wax Rubbing Letter' activity. Using natural materials, attendees created unique letter papers and were invited to write letters to the story’s characters, re-experiencing the warmth of letter-writing as a medium for emotional connection. The event was highly interactive, with the author personally signing books and drawing custom illustrations for readers, creating cherished reading memories.
The Kaohsiung Public Library announced that 'Worries Brought by the Wind / Expectations in the Wind' has been selected as a 'Recommended Book for August.' Starting August 5, the book will be exhibited at the main library and branch locations including Liugui, Gushan, Zhonglun, Baozhu, Hunei, Heti, Birdsong, Dashu San Guan, Youchang, Tianliao, Neimen, and Jiaxian, as well as at the MRT Smart Library, allowing more citizens to appreciate the creativity and charm of Taiwan’s original picture books.
Additionally, the library previewed that the submission guidelines for the fourth 'Good芽 Award' will be announced in August this year, continuing to invite picture book creators across Taiwan to submit their works. Through its publication support mechanism, the program aims to help more outstanding works transition from creation to publication, injecting fresh creative energy into Taiwan’s original picture book scene.
