At the Kuomintang's (KMT) party congress yesterday (25th), a party representative proposed that if the KMT's presidential candidate were to jointly nominate a candidate with another party, their political stances on cross-strait relations, national defense, and foreign affairs must align closely with the KMT's policy platform.
Regarding the possibility of the Taiwan People's Party (TPP) fielding a vice-presidential candidate in cooperation with the KMT, former TPP chair Ko Wen-je, speaking to reporters in Keelung today (26th), said, 'How do you know we only have a vice-presidential candidate? It's possible the TPP has an even stronger presidential candidate.'
Ko expressed his admiration for a statement previously made by former U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken on U.S.-China relations: 'Cooperate where we can, compete where necessary, and confront where required.' He emphasized that cooperation exists on multiple levels and cited Japan's coalition government as a successful model. The Komeito and Liberal Democratic Party have maintained long-term cooperation, always establishing formal party agreements that clearly outline areas of collaboration.
Ko noted that Chinese history, spanning thousands of years, has lacked a culture of division of labor and cooperation, so many challenges naturally arise during the process. However, he believes these issues can be resolved one by one, and that current cooperation is already significantly better than in 2024. He stated that after this year's election, they will reevaluate what succeeded and what failed, and determine which issues are agreed upon, which remain controversial, and which should be set aside. Therefore, party agreements must be increasingly detailed and transparent.
TPP Chair Huang Kuo-chang also affirmed that the party has consistently advocated for Taiwan's autonomy and cross-strait peace. The party continues to follow the path proposed by Ko Wen-je. He added that it is too early to comment on the 2028 election, and what matters more is demonstrating, through this year's joint governance approach, that different parties can cooperate based on shared principles and policies for the benefit of the Taiwanese people.
