Taiwanese actor Wang Kai (real name Wang Chien-lung) passed away at his home on the 26th at the age of 43, sending shockwaves through the entertainment industry. The exact cause of death has yet to be confirmed, but the incident has heightened public awareness of health issues among young adults.
Dr. Lin Wei-wen, a cardiologist at Tai-An Hospital, stated that sudden cardiac death is alarmingly common among young men, with up to 80% of cases linked to cardiovascular disease. The most common clinical cause is 'sudden cardiac death,' primarily due to conditions like myocardial infarction. U.S. research shows that 80% of sudden deaths at age 36 involve coronary artery narrowing.
By age group, individuals aged 18 to 39 account for 43% of sudden death cases, while those aged 40 to 59 account for 39%. A study in Portugal found that among those aged 36 to 37 who died suddenly, 92.5% were male and only 7.5% were female, highlighting a significant gender disparity.
Dr. Lin explained that cardiovascular diseases are increasingly affecting younger populations due to the early onset of 'three highs'—high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and high blood sugar. Young men often face high-stress jobs, chronic overwork, and metabolic abnormalities, all of which increase their risk. In contrast, young women benefit from the protective effects of estrogen, resulting in lower rates of cardiovascular disease.
Dr. Hung Yuan from the Tri-Service General Hospital defined 'sudden cardiac death' as an unexpected cardiac arrest in individuals with no known life-threatening conditions, resulting in death within one hour of symptom onset. In the U.S., approximately 300,000 people die from sudden cardiac death annually, with an incidence rate of about 1 in 1,000 among adults.
The most direct causes are life-threatening arrhythmias such as ventricular tachycardia and ventricular fibrillation. U.S. studies show that up to 80% of sudden death patients have structural heart diseases like coronary artery disease, cardiomyopathy, or congenital heart defects. Non-structural factors include genetic ion channel disorders, Brugada syndrome, and Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome, often associated with a family history of unexplained sudden death or personal episodes of unexplained fainting.
Regarding whether exercise can trigger sudden death, Dr. Hung noted that moderate exercise protects cardiovascular health by improving platelet aggregation. Conversely, excessive intense exercise may stimulate platelet aggregation and increase ventricular wall pressure due to greater blood return, potentially triggering cardiovascular events.
However, the public need not panic. Studies show that the risk of sudden death during exercise among young people in the U.S. is only about 1 in 200,000. In fact, 67% of sudden cardiac deaths occur during non-exercise periods. Maintaining moderate physical activity and undergoing regular cardiovascular health check-ups offer the best protection.
