The Central Weather Administration issued a high-temperature advisory today (28), warning of extremely hot weather across Taiwan. Nine counties and cities—including Greater Taipei and central and southern regions—are under a yellow alert, with temperatures potentially reaching up to 36°C. However, from today through Friday (31), localized afternoon thunderstorms and heavy rains are still expected across various regions.

Meteorological expert Wu De-rong noted that Tropical Storm Dolphin is rapidly intensifying over the open ocean and is expected to easily surpass the threshold for a 'violent typhoon.' Fortunately, there is no immediate direct threat to Taiwan within the next 10 days.

The Central Weather Administration's high-temperature advisory today indicates sweltering conditions, with Taipei City, New Taipei City, Taoyuan City, Taichung City, Changhua County, Nantou County, Tainan City, Kaohsiung City, and Pingtung County under a yellow alert due to temperatures exceeding 36°C.

One-Week Weather Outlook: Afternoon thunderstorms gradually decrease; high pressure brings hotter conditions starting August

Wu De-rong, adjunct associate professor at the Department of Atmospheric Sciences at Central University, analyzed in his 'Leak the Heavenly Mechanism Classroom' column that according to the latest European model simulations, the weather over the next week will gradually stabilize as the Pacific high-pressure system strengthens.

Today and Tomorrow (July 28–29) Atmospheric moisture slightly decreases. Isolated brief showers may occur in southeastern and southern regions. Afternoon thunderstorms are likely in mountainous areas and may extend to nearby lowlands.

July 30–31 The Pacific high-pressure system slightly strengthens, leading to gradually more stable atmospheric conditions. However, some moisture remains on the southwestern side of Taiwan, leading to scattered brief showers in central and southern areas. Daytime temperatures remain high, with localized afternoon thunderstorms possible.

August 1–6 The Pacific high-pressure system will fully cover Taiwan, resulting in extremely stable atmospheric conditions. Clear and scorching weather is expected across the island, making sun protection and heatstroke prevention top priorities during this period.

Typhoon 'Dolphin' to undergo explosive intensification—may reach violent typhoon level, rivaling this year's 'Wind King'

Regarding distant typhoon activity, the Central Weather Administration reported that Tropical Storm Dolphin's center was located at 13.5 degrees north latitude and 173.5 degrees east longitude early this morning, moving west-southwest at 15 km/h, with a 7-level wind radius of approximately 100 km.

Wu De-rong analyzed that Dolphin will shift to a west-northwest track over the next five days, approaching the waters southeast of Japan. Its path crosses an area with 'high sea surface temperatures, low vertical wind shear, and strong upper-level divergence'—ideal conditions that fulfill the three golden criteria for rapid typhoon intensification. This is typical of large, powerful typhoons during a 'Super El Niño year.'

Dolphin is expected to intensify rapidly and easily surpass the 'violent typhoon' threshold (with sustained wind speeds near the center projected to reach 58 m/s), rivaling this year's 'Wind King' Bavi (60 m/s). However, path simulations indicate that Dolphin poses no threat to Taiwan's weather within the next 10 days, and the public need not panic.
