Bluetooth earphones are compact and are often casually discarded as regular household waste when broken. However, this seemingly minor act could instantly put garbage trucks at risk of fire. The Ministry of Environment warns that wireless 3C products like Bluetooth earphones contain lithium batteries. If mixed with regular trash, these batteries may be crushed or impacted during the garbage truck’s compression and transportation process, leading to deformation or short circuits that could cause fires. In severe cases, explosions may occur, endangering sanitation workers and nearby residents.
Lithium Batteries in Bluetooth Earphones Could Ignite During Garbage Compression
While many people know not to dispose of power banks directly into garbage trucks, they often overlook that small electronic devices such as Bluetooth earphones, wireless mice, wearable devices, and handheld fans may also contain rechargeable lithium batteries. The Ministry of Environment has identified Bluetooth earphones as a common product containing lithium batteries, emphasizing that regardless of size, such devices must not be mixed with regular waste when discarded. They must be separately classified and delivered to authorized recycling channels.
The Ministry explains that garbage trucks use powerful compression to reduce waste volume. If lithium batteries are trapped among large amounts of trash, their outer casing may rupture, deform under pressure, or experience short circuits due to contact between positive and negative terminals—potentially generating high heat, combustion, or even explosions. Lithium batteries stored together with keys, coins, or other metal objects may also short-circuit accidentally through electrode contact.
The Taichung City Environmental Protection Bureau also reminds the public that lithium batteries are commonly found in smartphones, power banks, and wireless earphones. These items should be properly collected and handed separately to recycling personnel. Avoid mixing them with regular trash to reduce the risk of fire and explosion during waste collection, transportation, and downstream processing.
How to Dispose of Broken Bluetooth Earphones: Return Intact and Separately
Do not simply stuff broken Bluetooth earphones into a trash bag, nor attempt to break, cut, or dismantle the casing to remove the battery. The Ministry previously warned against disassembling or damaging discarded lithium batteries, as physical damage could trigger overheating or violent reactions.
If the battery can be safely removed according to the product design, detach it and cover the positive and negative terminals or metal contacts with insulating tape, storing it separately from other items. For built-in batteries that cannot be removed by users, keep the device intact, package the earphone and charging case separately, and deliver them to municipal recycling trucks, telecommunications retailers, or authorized recycling facilities. Inform the recycling staff that the product contains a lithium battery.
The Ministry’s current safety guidelines for lithium battery recycling can be summarized in three steps:
- Classification: Lithium batteries and products containing them must not be mixed with regular waste or other recyclables. - Insulation: Removable batteries should have their terminals covered with insulating tape to prevent short circuits from metal contact. - Recycling: Deliver to municipal recycling trucks, retailers, or licensed recycling processors.
Stop Using Immediately If Earphones Swell, Heat Up, or Emit Odors
If your Bluetooth earphones or charging case show abnormal swelling, overheating, burning smells, casing cracks, or severe deformation, stop using and charging them immediately. Isolate them from other items and avoid placing them in high-temperature environments such as inside vehicles, motorcycle compartments, or under direct sunlight. Do not store them in damp areas like bathrooms. Deliver them to an authorized recycling channel as soon as possible.
Although Bluetooth earphones are only about the size of a coin, the lithium batteries inside may still retain residual charge. The next time you clean out a drawer and find broken or long-unused earphones, do not throw them directly into the garbage truck. By properly sorting, insulating, and recycling them, you can prevent a tiny battery from becoming a fire starter inside a garbage truck.
