How to Get Rid of Geckos at Home?
Geckos frequently appear in household environments. One netizen posted in distress after a medium-sized gecko appeared in their room. Despite trying insecticides, bleach, and playing bird sounds, they couldn’t drive it away.
Pest control companies recommend maintaining household hygiene and reducing mosquitoes and other insects—the gecko’s food source. They also suggest using eggshells, camphor balls, garlic, onions, and chili water to prevent geckos from entering homes.
Real-Life Experience: A Dcard User’s Struggle
A user posted on Dcard: 'I’m terrified of geckos. A medium-sized one has been appearing near my fish tank and even crawling onto my bed, severely disrupting my life.'
To get rid of the gecko, the user tried playing bird sounds on their phone, spraying bleach and a small amount of insecticide in frequented areas, buying many cockroach traps, and placing eggshells and crushed garlic around—but nothing worked.
The post sparked discussion, with netizens offering various suggestions:
- 'Have you tried Green Oil Essence? In my university dorm, I dripped it near the window where the gecko usually appeared. It stepped on it, fell to the floor, wriggled, dropped its tail, and ran away. Never saw it again.' - 'I just killed a gecko—almost went crazy. Sprayed alcohol on it, it couldn’t move, then used an IKEA sticky roller to pick it up and flushed it down the toilet.' - 'Our house used to have flypaper that often caught geckos. Probably they came for the flies and got trapped too—just a reference.' - 'A classmate made double-sided tape traps on the wall, and caught a gecko the next day.'
Pest Experts: Keep Geckos Away Without Insecticides
A pest control company explained that geckos are common in summer when insects multiply, as they feed on small household pests. Besides maintaining cleanliness and reducing insect breeding, here are several methods to scare geckos away:
1. **Eggshells** Geckos associate eggshells with predators. Place halved, uncrushed eggshells near outdoor entrances or kitchen doors. Fresher shells work better; replace every 3–4 weeks.
2. **Camphor Balls** Natural camphor balls are non-toxic and repel insects, moths, and mold. Place them under sinks, in kitchens, or near refrigerators to keep geckos away.
3. **Sticky Traps** Many insects eaten by geckos are attracted to light, so geckos often appear near light sources. Place sticky traps near lights, windowsills, or doorways to catch both insects and geckos.
4. **Homemade Coffee-Tobacco Pellets** Mix wet coffee grounds with tobacco powder, roll into small balls, and secure with toothpicks to prevent crumbling. Place around gecko nests or common areas.
5. **Garlic** Geckos dislike the strong smell of garlic. Placing garlic cloves near doors can prevent them from entering.
6. **Onion** Onions have a pungent odor that geckos avoid. Place half an onion where geckos appear, and they’ll disappear.
7. **Chili Water** Mix chili powder with water to make a spray. Apply under refrigerators, behind sofas, on walls, in warm and damp corners, or anywhere geckos have been seen.
