A magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck Kumamoto, Japan, on April 28, resulting in multiple casualties and widespread damage. In response, Taiwanese legislator Lai Jui-lung announced on April 29 that he would donate his entire monthly salary to support earthquake relief and reconstruction efforts. He also called on all sectors of society to respond collectively to the disaster, offering practical assistance to help affected communities overcome this crisis and showcasing the spirit of mutual support between Taiwan and Japan.
Lai stated that Kaohsiung is an internationally connected city, and when a sister city faces a major disaster, it should uphold the 'Kaohsiung Can Help' spirit by delivering care and support across borders. He expressed his hope to contribute, however modestly, to helping those affected.
He noted that immediately after the earthquake, he coordinated with Kaohsiung Mayor Chen Chi-mai. The city's search and rescue team has completed preparations and is on standby, ready to join international relief operations as needed, based on Japan's requests and central government coordination. At present, there have been no reports of injuries or fatalities among Taiwanese nationals.
Lai expressed deep sorrow over the loss of life and property damage in Kumamoto. He extended his deepest condolences to the victims and sincerely wished for the swift recovery of the injured, hoping affected residents can return to normal life as soon as possible.
He emphasized that Kaohsiung and Kumamoto have maintained close interactions since establishing a friendship agreement in 2013, building a strong sister-city relationship. During his visit to Kumamoto this past May, he deeply felt the local community's warmth and friendship toward Taiwan and Kaohsiung. Therefore, at this time of crisis, he believes it is essential to stand at the forefront and show support.
Lai stressed that while natural disasters are merciless, humanity is full of compassion. By donating one month's salary, he hopes to set an example and inspire more businesses and individuals to join relief and reconstruction efforts. He aims to help Kumamoto recover from the shadow of the earthquake and ensure the precious bond of mutual trust and friendship between Taiwan and Japan continues to grow stronger.
