KMT legislator Hsieh Long-chieh stated today (29) during a legislative inquiry that a relative of a senior central official of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has gone missing after traveling to mainland China. In response, Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) Minister Chiu Chui-cheng confirmed that the case was reported to them on the afternoon of the 28th and that they will actively assist in handling it.
Chiu Chui-cheng attended a plenary committee session at the Legislative Yuan today to deliver a special report on "Cases of Taiwanese Going Missing in Mainland China and Government Response Measures," and responded to questioning. Also present were SEF Secretary-General Lo Wen-chia, Interior Minister Liu Shih-fang, and National Police Agency Director-General Chang Jung-hsing.
During questioning, Hsieh said that rumors are spreading widely in Tainan about a senior DPP official's relative going missing after traveling to mainland China. Some speculate criminal involvement, others suggest the person was detained after being targeted by united front work, while some claim the individual simply lost contact during a trip. There are even rumors that the person is already imprisoned in Luohu Prison in Shenzhen.
In response, Chiu said that the MAC would look into any reported cases. Hsieh replied that he had already submitted official documents to the MAC, emphasizing, "This is a very high-ranking official of your party—someone at the central level—and it's their relative." After briefly consulting with his staff, Chiu stated that they had only received the case report the previous afternoon and would actively assist.
Chiu also suggested that if Hsieh is personally acquainted with the individual, MAC personnel could conduct a family care visit to gather more information for assistance. Hsieh responded sarcastically, "You know this person better than I do. Now you're talking about a care visit? A high-ranking official of your own party—don't you understand the gravity?" Shortly after, a staff member briefed Chiu, who then reaffirmed that the case had been received the previous afternoon and that they would actively support it.
