Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an recently raised the issue of a no-confidence motion during an interview with veteran media personality Huang Kuang-chin, stating that several legislators have privately suggested such a move. In response, Chen Zhihan, director of the民众Party's legislative caucus, appeared on the program '52 Live Room' on the 29th and pointed out that Chiang Wan-an has not even clarified discussions within the KMT, making his call for a no-confidence motion overly impulsive. Given Chiang's current position, he should be more cautious when discussing such a motion.
Chen Zhihan added that if Chiang ultimately decides to propose a no-confidence motion, KMT legislative candidates in northern and central Taiwan might benefit from campaign support by Taoyuan Mayor Chang Shan-cheng. However, in southern and central regions where election races are tight, KMT legislators like Hsieh Lung-chieh, the KMT's Tainan mayoral candidate, would face a dilemma between their legislative and mayoral campaigns. It's too impulsive to hastily propose a no-confidence motion when even the KMT's own interests can't be reconciled. If the no-confidence motion succeeds, the legislature will enter a 60-day vacuum. President Lai Qing-te currently ignores the Legislative Yuan, and in such a scenario, he would become even more of a 'king'.
Chen Zhihan warned that the legislative vacuum caused by a no-confidence motion would shift public attention to the new premier, making accountability for issues like the toxic oil scandal even more difficult. With the KMT not even having internal consensus, discussing a no-confidence motion now is too impulsive.
Chen Zhihan revealed that she had discussed the no-confidence issue in 2024, noting that if the premier lost confidence, a blue-white coalition might have pushed for a no-confidence motion. However, with the upcoming nine-in-one elections this year, many legislators face re-election regardless of whether a no-confidence motion is filed. Raising such a motion rashly at this time would worsen resource allocation issues from a full re-election, potentially leading to losing to the ruling party. She said she 'broke into a cold sweat' for Chiang Wan-an and urged him to be more cautious when discussing a no-confidence motion.
