Smoking is harmful to health.
A shocking reality has emerged: 90% of adolescents begin smoking with flavored tobacco. In response, the Anti-Smoking Alliance is urging immediate action and has issued four urgent demands to the government.
First, the alliance demands that laws such as the Health Promotion Act and tobacco regulation legislation explicitly include a ban on the sale of flavored tobacco. Current regulations are weak and rely heavily on industry self-regulation, so legally binding prohibitions are essential.
Second, the group calls for the establishment of an independent policy-making process free from tobacco industry funding and lobbying. Past attempts to strengthen regulations have been reversed under industry pressure, highlighting the need for transparency and fairness.
Third, the alliance requests a complete ban on marketing and advertising targeting youth. Promotional activities on social media and youth-oriented platforms are particularly concerning and require immediate intervention.
Fourth, it proposes launching a large-scale public awareness campaign on the health risks of flavored tobacco. Raising public awareness is crucial to shifting societal acceptance.
The Anti-Smoking Alliance stresses that 'closing the gateway to smoking will reduce future healthcare costs and extend the healthy life expectancy of the nation.' The group plans to continue disseminating research data and petitioning the Diet in the coming months.
