Taiwan's stock market has plunged sharply in recent days. Although the market briefly turned positive during trading today (30th), it was pushed down again toward the close, ultimately ending 105 points lower at 39,933 — a daily swing exceeding 1,700 points. While the decline has somewhat stabilized, the key 40,000-point level remains out of reach.
In response, financial expert Jerry Yuan stated frankly that investors retaining only one-third of their gains this year are still within the normal range, while many may have already lost part or all of their principal. He particularly warned a specific group: those who haven't sold a single share and now face paper losses with little cash on hand.
Yuan noted that although today's market showed signs of stabilization, its strength still falls short of his expectations. "Regardless, if you've managed to preserve half of your profits from before mid-June and hold more cash than stocks, you're among the stronger investors right now."
He emphasized that retaining one-third of profits is still normal; even those who've given back all gains shouldn't feel discouraged as long as principal remains intact. However, "investors who haven't sold a single share, now show full paper losses, and hold no cash — you really need to rethink your strategy."
Many retail investors responded with comments: "I said I was quitting yesterday, but saw the market rise this morning and impulsively bought one unit of 0050"; "I've already decided my strategy: park, newspaper, broken bowl"; "What strategy? My portfolio is down 70% on paper"; "My strategy is 100% cash, waiting for the next entry"; "My strategy is deleting the app and checking again in three months."
