Taiwan's stock market has recently plummeted, with the weighted index losing its 40,000-point threshold. In response, former legislator Kuo Cheng-huang criticized the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) government on his personal YouTube channel, stating it lacks achievements and has failed to address the stock market crash.
Kuo pointed out that Hsieh Chin-ho, editor-in-chief of the biweekly magazine "Common Wealth," said at the end of June that Yageo, an electronic components manufacturer, saw its stock price surge, with Chairman Jerry Chen "playing a big strategic game." However, Yageo's stock price sharply declined on the 29th, closing at NT$507.
Additionally, TSMC Chairman Mark Liu urged investors in June: "If you're planning to buy stocks, please continue." Yet TSMC's stock also fell on the 29th, dropping to NT$2,190.
Kuo criticized the DPP government for repeatedly highlighting stock market performance as its sole achievement, leading many citizens to borrow money or mortgage homes to invest. Despite his experience on the Legislative Yuan's Finance Committee and deep understanding of financial markets, Kuo admitted he only risks 50% of his cash in investments.
He stated the DPP has no real achievements and is ignoring the current stock crash, adding that at least TSMC is still holding up.
Kuo warned the stock crash isn't over, as renewed U.S.-Iran tensions have driven up international oil prices. Moreover, the severe debt levels of the U.S. tech 'Magnificent Seven'—Microsoft, Apple, NVIDIA, Amazon, Alphabet, Meta, and Tesla—are drawing increasing scrutiny.
Currently, U.S. interest rate hikes and skepticism toward AI financial models are the biggest variables. President Lai Qing-de, Kuo said, is plagued by bad luck and facing setbacks in all areas.
