On the 27th, Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an, during a solo interview, called for a no-confidence vote against Executive Yuan Premier Cho Jung-tai, urging him to take political responsibility. Chiang stated that he had already discussed the matter with several Kuomintang (KMT) legislators, triggering significant political attention in Taiwan.
In response, former legislator Kuo Cheng-liang addressed the issue during a live broadcast on his personal YouTube channel. Kuo pointed out that if a no-confidence vote passes, the Legislative Yuan must be re-elected within 60 days. This means there would be a 60-day 'vacuum period' during which no legislative body exists.
He then posed a critical question: 'How do you know President Lai Qing-te won't declare martial law?' Kuo warned that during this interim period, President Lai could potentially declare martial law under the pretext of an emergency, temporarily suspending democratic governance.
Furthermore, Kuo highlighted that many KMT legislators are currently facing criminal charges. Once they lose their legislative status, they could be immediately detained by judicial authorities. In other words, opposition lawmakers could be left defenseless and vulnerable to political prosecution following a no-confidence motion.
Kuo criticized: 'Those calling for a no-confidence vote don’t understand how evil politics can be. Chiang Wan-an is too naive.' He suggested that after a no-confidence vote, the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) might choose not to dissolve the legislature but only replace the premier, rendering the opposition’s efforts futile.
He also warned that the DPP could exploit the chaos to destabilize the KMT or even detain Ko Wen-je, leader of the Taiwan People's Party, since the opposition would no longer have legislative immunity. 'At that point, the opposition would have no protective umbrella,' Kuo emphasized.
Kuo concluded by stating, 'The top DPP leaders are all people who have 'crawled out of hell.' The opposition must not be so naive about the realities of politics.'
