The sea is more than just scenery—it is an exploratory journey shaped by sea breezes, tides, and art. The 2026 Taoyuan Land Art Festival will take place from July 4 to August 30, this year themed around the 'Pearl Coast of Taoyuan,' connecting a 35-kilometer coastline across Dayuan, Guanyin, and Xinwu, stretching from Zhubei Fishing Port to Xinwu’s coastal areas. The festival transforms precious natural landscapes—including ports, wetlands, dunes, algal reefs, and stone weirs—into a wall-less coastal art museum that coexists with nature.

This year’s festival brings together artistic energy from 13 countries, inviting 25 international and 47 domestic artists, including 9 local Taoyuan-based artists, to create over 70 land art installations. Centered around Zhubei and Yong’an Fishing Ports, the festival links four major ecological zones: Xucuo Port Wetland, Caotuo Dunes, Guansin Algal Reef, and Xinwu Stone Weir Cluster, creating an expansive coastal art exhibition space. Visitors need not enter a traditional museum—simply walking along the coast allows them to experience art amid sea breezes, sunset glows, and the soothing sound of waves. Through diverse perspectives, they can rediscover the rich natural landscapes, fishing village culture, and local stories of Taoyuan’s western coast, feeling the unique charm woven from art and coastline.

Strolling Through Fishing Ports, Wetlands, and Dunes: Encountering Coastal Art

From Zhubei Fishing Port to the Xinwu Stone Weir Cluster, this year’s land art festival resembles a coastal treasure hunt, linking dunes, wetlands, and fishing port scenery. At the first stop, Zhubei Fishing Port, the summer sea breeze carries a salty tang as you walk along the beach. In the distance, fishing boats and the horizon create a picturesque harbor scene. 'House of Zhubei' is a geometric bamboo structure that casts layered shadows under sunlight, framing the seascape like a living, time-evolving painting. Nearby, 'The Wind from 6,000 Kilometers' stands as a wind-responsive kinetic sculpture inspired by the Arctic Tern, gently swaying with the sea breeze, inviting visitors to pause and feel the unique rhythm of Zhubei Fishing Port.

Next, at Xucuo Port Wetland, travelers are drawn to 'Finding a Home by the Sea,' a hermit crab sculpture. The small crab quietly rests between wetland and shore, as if accompanying visitors in their search for a personal seaside corner, adding warmth and whimsy to the coastal walk.

Moving on to Caotuo Dunes, the layered dunes and vast coastline form a majestic natural stage, evoking the serene atmosphere unique to Taoyuan’s western coast. On the beach, 'Returning to the Sea' uses driftwood to assemble the silhouette of a giant walking toward the ocean, creating a striking contrast between rugged materials and the soft dunes. 'Scattered Pearls on a Jade Plate' features bamboo spheres of varying sizes scattered across the sand, resembling pearls spilled along the shore under sunlight and sea breeze. As art blends into the rolling dunes and tidal scenery, Caotuo Dunes reveal a unique charm that is both grand and poetic.

Exploring Algal Reefs, Fishing Ports, and Stone Weirs: Experiencing Art and Coastline Coexistence

The journey continues to Guansin Algal Reef, where tidal flats and algal reef formations create Taoyuan’s unique coastal landscape. Installed beside the viewing platform, 'Symbiosis with the Reef' draws inspiration from the geological features of algal reefs formed over millennia, transforming a simple coastal lookout into an artistic space where visitors can walk through, pause, and feel the breath of the coast.

At the Yong’an Fishing Port zone, 'Song of the Waves' near the Yong’an Conch Cultural Experience Park weaves traditional bamboo craftsmanship into a massive, undulating curve, resembling ocean waves frozen in the sea breeze. The intricate bamboo texture harmonizes beautifully with the flowing, column-free curved architecture of the Conch Hall. Walking along the Zhu Lang Tian Stairs over Houhu Creek, visitors can also admire the popular work 'Blessing of the Surging Waves.' Inspired by ocean waves, the perforated carvings allow natural light from the sky and sea to shine through. When photographed from a specific angle, a heart-shaped wave appears to bloom behind the viewer.

Arriving at the Xinwu Stone Weir Cluster at sunset, golden light spills across the sea and the centuries-old stone weirs. Gazing at the large-scale installation 'Rebirth: The Light Gatherer,' one realizes these artworks are not merely placed on the coast—they retell the coast’s own stories through art. Some works remind us to cherish nature and the marine environment, while others invite travelers to pause and re-observe the vast, quiet sea before them.

At the end of the journey, pause briefly beside 'Whose Sunset.' Two giant figures sit on the beach, facing the ocean, gazing at the sun slowly sinking below the horizon. Sea breeze, waves, and an orange sky weave a gentle, serene scene, leaving the most warm and unforgettable ending to this land art journey along the Pearl Coast of Taoyuan.

Diverse Side Events Create Taoyuan’s Most Charming Summer Coastal Experience

Beyond the land art installations, the 2026 Taoyuan Land Art Festival features the 'Tidal Settlement' special exhibition, guided walks, art workshops, community mini-tours, and a digital-physical hybrid stamp rally, allowing visitors to deeply explore the cultural roots and natural charm of the Pearl Coast through diverse experiences.

This summer, slow down, walk along the coast, let the sea breeze guide you, and feel the charm of art and nature under the sunset glow. The 2026 Taoyuan Land Art Festival is more than an art exhibition—it is a coastal exploration journey connecting natural ecology, local culture, and sustainability. Step into the Pearl Coast of Taoyuan and rediscover the rich, moving landscapes of the western coast.
