39-year-old professional baseball player Daikane Yoshida held a press conference today to announce his retirement, stating that his physical condition was the decisive factor. During the press conference, his former teammate from the Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters, Atsuki Inaba, made a surprise appearance to offer his congratulations, moving Yoshida to tears. After graduating from Fukuoka Daiichi High School in Japan, Yoshida was drafted by the Nippon Professional Baseball's Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters in the 2005 high school draft, beginning his professional career. Following the 2016 season, Yoshida exercised his free agent (FA) rights and transferred to the Yomiuri Giants in 2017. He played with the Giants for five years. In 2022, he played in an independent league in the United States, and in 2024, he returned to Japan to join the Oisix Niigata Swallows, a second-division team in Nippon Professional Baseball. Former member of the Chinese Taipei national team and current player for the NPB's second-division Oisix Niigata team, Daikane Yoshida has officially announced his retirement. (Source: Oisix official Facebook page) Yoshida announced at the end of July that he would retire after this season, concluding his 21-year professional baseball career. Today, the team held a retirement press conference for him in Niigata City. Yoshida expressed gratitude to the teams he played for, thanking the Fighters for introducing him to the world of professional baseball and teaching him that survival requires victory in competition. He also expressed appreciation to the Giants for providing him with a supportive environment. Currently playing for Oisix Niigata Swallows, he stated he will give his all in every remaining game before considering his post-retirement plans after the season ends. Speaking about his decision to retire, Yoshida frankly admitted that every day presents challenges and obstacles. Before competing against others, one must first overcome oneself; without conquering oneself, victory over others is impossible. He noted that he made many adjustments throughout his career, but with age, physical decline is an unavoidable reality. While his mind may still feel capable, his body can no longer keep up—this being the primary reason for his retirement. During the press conference, his former teammate from the Fighters era, Atsuki Inaba—now the Fighters' second-team manager—made a surprise appearance, causing Yoshida to break down in tears. Inaba recalled their time fighting side by side, filled with both wonderful memories and difficult challenges. He said their mutual growth through these experiences has become a valuable asset in life. Inaba offered heartfelt wishes, urging Yoshida to continue living in his unique 'Daikane Yoshida style' after retirement. He expressed confidence that Yoshida’s accumulated experiences will positively impact others’ lives and encouraged him to keep striving forward. Over his NPB first-team career, Yoshida recorded 1,322 games played, 4,307 at-bats, 1,164 hits, 105 home runs, 141 stolen bases, 482 RBIs, and a batting average of .270. He was named the Pacific League stolen base leader in 2013 and won four outfield Golden Glove Awards throughout his career.
