The Taiwan People's Party (TPP) held its anniversary event today (2nd), with Taichung Mayor Lu Shiow-yen of the Kuomintang (KMT) in attendance. In a press interview, Lu expressed her gratitude for the invitation, stating, "Thank you to the TPP for inviting me. As mayor of Taichung, I welcome our good friends from the TPP to celebrate their party anniversary here in Taichung. Happy birthday to you all. The Blue-White alliance must move forward firmly and resolutely."
Lu further commented on the recent carcinogenic cooking oil scandal, calling it a "shocking development." She pointed out that Taiwan Sugar Corporation (Taisugar) had detected carcinogens as early as May but, as a state-owned enterprise, failed to report the findings. "This is clearly a case of covering up evidence (eating the case). From the moment the carcinogenic oil issue emerged, the central government has done nothing but conceal the truth, cover up the facts, and act like a door god—doing nothing. Therefore, I call on the people to vote to topple the cabinet in 2026 and to topple Lai in 2028."
Prior to the event, Lu told reporters that despite KMT and TPP legislators loudly demanding investigations in the legislature and calling for food safety protection, local governments have been overwhelmed trying to investigate, uncovering many suspicious details. However, their investigations have repeatedly been obstructed—officials in the central government claimed local authorities were acting too fast, publishing results too quickly, or that products with less than 20% contamination did not need to be recalled. Despite repeated calls from local governments for central action, the central government has taken no investigative steps to date—engaging in cover-ups, acting as passive door gods, and suppressing cases.
Lu warned, "If we do not stand up now, the central government will continue to endanger public food safety and harm people's health. While it is difficult under constitutional procedures for the legislature to pass a vote of no confidence, the people are the masters of the nation and hold the power. I therefore call on everyone to come out and vote in the 2026 local elections, using their sacred vote to express disapproval of the Lai administration and demand better governance. In 2026, let the people collectively topple the cabinet and push the DPP government to reform. If the DPP remains stubborn and refuses to change, then in 2028, the people must topple Lai."
In her speech at the party celebration, Lu emphasized that the TPP is a young and idealistic political party. "Taichung is the first demonstration zone for Blue-White cooperation nationwide, so holding the party anniversary here in Taichung is absolutely the right choice. The DPP has repeatedly tried to divide the Blue-White alliance, but cooperation benefits both, while division harms both. We must firmly move forward with the Blue-White alliance. The DPP's governance has been chaotic and off-key. A legislative no-confidence vote is difficult, but in 2026, every citizen can vote. Let the people topple the cabinet in 2026 and topple Lai in 2028."
