Amid the peak of summer heat, the Central Weather Administration today issued an orange heat warning for Taipei City and New Taipei City, forecasting a high probability of consecutive days with temperatures reaching 36°C. Yellow warnings were also issued for Changhua County and Hualien County, where temperatures may exceed 36°C, requiring caution against heatstroke.
Meteorological expert Wu Derong noted that the first half of the week will be clear and extremely hot across the country, but the powerful Typhoon White Dolphin is moving toward the Ryukyu Islands and the East China Sea. There is a 50% chance that its storm zone will affect northern Taiwan's sea areas. Starting Friday (August 7), outer circulation will pass by, bringing rain to northern Taiwan. The public is urged not to let their guard down.
Weekly Weather Outlook: Typhoon White Dolphin Nears Ryukyu – Rain Begins in Northern Taiwan from August 7
Wu Derong, adjunct associate professor at the Department of Atmospheric Sciences, Central University, wrote in his column "Leak the Heavens Classroom" that according to the latest European model simulations, from today through Tuesday (August 4), Taiwan will remain under the influence of the Pacific high-pressure system, resulting in stable atmospheric conditions and clear, scorching weather. Maximum temperatures across Taiwan may reach around 38°C, with occasional localized afternoon showers in mountainous areas. The public is advised to take precautions against sun exposure and heatstroke.
Weather changes are expected later in the week:
### Wednesday to Thursday (August 5–6): Isolated short-duration showers in northern mountainous areas
Northeast winds will develop around Taiwan, bringing isolated short-duration showers to the northern coastal areas and mountainous regions on the windward side. Central and southern regions may experience localized thunderstorms in the afternoons.
### Friday to Sunday (August 7–9): Typhoon White Dolphin's outer circulation passes northern waters, bringing rain to northern Taiwan
Typhoon White Dolphin's outer circulation will pass through northern waters and move into China. Affected by its outer bands, northern Taiwan will turn rainy starting Friday (August 7). From Saturday to Sunday (August 8–9), rainfall will expand to western and northeastern Taiwan.
### Monday to Tuesday (August 10–11): Typhoon moves away, strong afternoon convection in localized areas
As the typhoon moves away, Taiwan will shift to southwest winds. Windward areas may still see isolated brief showers, while other regions will stabilize with rising temperatures. However, the atmosphere will remain unstable, making strong afternoon convection likely in localized areas.
Latest Update on Typhoon White Dolphin: Weakening to Large Moderate Typhoon, 50% Chance of Impact on Northern Waters
According to the latest typhoon update from the Central Weather Administration, at 2 a.m. today, the center of the strong Typhoon White Dolphin was located about 3,510 kilometers east of Eluanbi, moving northwest at 25 km/h. Its central pressure was 925 hPa, with maximum sustained winds near the center reaching 51 m/s. The average radius of its 7-level gale-force winds extended 300 kilometers.
Wu Derong analyzed that White Dolphin has passed its peak intensity and will gradually weaken into a large moderate typhoon over the coming days. Its path over the next five days will shift slightly westward from a northwest-west trajectory, approaching the Ryukyu Islands. The latest European ensemble model simulations show that the average projected path over the next 10 days will pass near Japan's Ryukyu Islands and the southern East China Sea, eventually making landfall at the border of Zhejiang and Fujian provinces.
Regarding impact probabilities, there is a 70% chance that the storm zone will affect the Ryukyu region, a 50% chance of impacting northern Taiwan's sea areas, and about a 20% chance of affecting Taiwan's landmass. Given the typhoon's large storm radius and proximity to Taiwan, its path may still adjust, and the threat should not be underestimated.
Will There Be Another Typhoon?
Regarding the tropical depression east of Luzon Island, Wu Derong added that this system is expected to turn northeastward. Even if it develops into a mild typhoon, it is likely to be a short-lived "short-duration typhoon."
