Kaohsiung's key transportation infrastructure project, the reconstruction of Jiuruh Bridge, has officially opened to traffic, completing construction approximately five months ahead of schedule. The reopening of east-west traffic on Jiuruh Road not only improves transportation efficiency but also enhances surrounding road networks and drainage systems, providing citizens with a safer and more convenient commuting environment. This milestone symbolizes Kaohsiung's continued urban integration following the completion of its railway underground project.
The Public Works Bureau stated that the new Jiuruh Bridge began construction in August 2024 and was originally scheduled for completion in January 2027. Thanks to the engineering team's proactive acceleration efforts, the bridge opened for traffic about five months earlier than planned. In addition to bridge reconstruction, the project included the flattening of surrounding roads and improvements to the stormwater drainage system, effectively enhancing road service quality and regional flood control capacity.
The Construction Engineering Office explained that the new Jiuruh Bridge spans the Ai River with a low-slope design, eliminating the spatial barrier created by the old elevated structure. This creates a more pedestrian- and cyclist-friendly environment while maintaining scenic views and recreational functions, strengthening connectivity between both banks of the Ai River.
In terms of traffic planning, the new bridge features dedicated side lanes to reduce interference from turning vehicles on main traffic flow. Straight-moving cars and motorcycles share the main roadway, minimizing road segmentation and improving overall traffic efficiency and smoother user movement.
The Construction Engineering Office reminds the public that traffic patterns at some intersections have changed following the bridge's opening, with direct left turns now permitted at certain junctions. Road users are urged to follow on-site signs, road markings, and traffic signals. Police will deploy volunteer traffic officers for approximately two months to assist drivers in adapting to the new traffic patterns, ensuring safety and smooth flow during the initial phase of operation.
