In anticipation of the summer travel and homecoming rush, Taiwan Railways will implement a new policy from August 1 to 31, canceling the free seats on the West Coast Line's EMU3000 new Tzu-Chiang trains and switching to all reserved seats on weekends. Passengers without reservations will not be able to board directly, but they can purchase a limited 200 standing tickets on-site. The use of electronic tickets or monthly passes is prohibited, and violators will be charged additional fares and a 50% fine.
Taiwan Railways has decided to implement this new policy because, in the past, the popular trains on the West Coast Line during the summer weekends were crowded with free-seat passengers, causing congestion in the aisles and around the doors, which affected passenger comfort and safety. This new policy only applies to the EMU3000 trains on the West Coast Line during weekends, and other trains such as the East Coast Line's Hualien and Taitung services, weekday services, local trains, Chu-Kuang trains, PP-style Tzu-Chiang trains, Puxing trains, and Taroko trains are not affected.
If you cannot make a reservation, you can purchase a limited 200 standing tickets on-site. Passengers with standing tickets are only allowed to stand and board in the general carriages from Car 1 to Car 5 and Car 7 to Car 12. Standing and boarding in Car 6, the 'Tengyun Business Class' business space, is strictly prohibited. Passengers must pay attention to the carriage signs after boarding.
The use of electronic tickets or monthly passes is prohibited, and violators will be charged additional fares and a 50% fine. Passengers with TPASS commuter monthly passes or those planning to take short-distance trips are advised to switch to express trains or general Tzu-Chiang trains to continue enjoying the monthly pass discount and the convenience of card tapping.
