The Central Weather Administration announced today (3rd) that Typhoon No. 13, “Dolphin,” although downgraded to a moderate typhoon, maintains a wide circulation with a storm radius reaching 300 kilometers. The typhoon is expected to approach Taiwan most closely starting this Friday (August 7), with a marine typhoon warning potentially issued during the afternoon of the 7th. From Saturday to Sunday (August 8–9), northern and central Taiwan will experience significant wind and rain, prompting authorities to urge residents to prepare early for typhoon and heavy rain impacts.

Impact of Moderate Typhoon “Dolphin” on Taiwan: Large Storm Radius, Skirting Northern Waters from Friday

According to the latest data from the Central Weather Administration, moderate typhoon “Dolphin” will continue moving northwest to westward. While still distant from Taiwan before Thursday (August 6), it will pass through waters near Okinawa starting Friday (August 7). The Administration explained that due to the typhoon’s expansive outer circulation, a marine typhoon warning may be issued as early as the afternoon of the 7th.

Huang En-hung, a forecaster at the Central Weather Administration, stated that current predictions indicate “Dolphin” will approach Taiwan as a moderate typhoon, with no sign of its storm radius significantly shrinking. The period from August 8 to 10 will see the most pronounced effects on Taiwan. As the typhoon approaches, unfavorable environmental conditions may cause it to weaken into a mild typhoon. However, due to its exceptionally wide storm radius, its later track remains uncertain, and the actual wind and rain impacts on Taiwan will depend on whether it ultimately approaches farther north or south.

One-Week Weather Forecast and Rain Expansion Timeline

Scattered light rain possible in central and southern Taiwan from early morning to late morning on Thursday.

Foehn Wind Alert: On Thursday (8/6), foehn winds are likely in Yilan, potentially pushing local temperatures above 36°C.

3. Friday (8/7): Outer cloud bands of typhoon approach, northern Taiwan turns rainy first

Weather Overview: Northern Taiwan will see scattered brief showers, while central and southern regions may also experience isolated brief showers. Eastern Taiwan will be partly cloudy to sunny, with thunderstorms possible in mountainous areas during the afternoon.

Foehn Wind Alert: Yilan remains at risk of foehn winds, with temperatures possibly exceeding 36°C.

4. Saturday–Sunday (8/8–8/9): Typhoon closest approach! Northern mountainous areas under threat of heavy downpours
