LINE's short-video service, LINE VOOM, has announced its exit from the Taiwan market. Following Japan and Thailand, where service termination was previously announced, LINE officially revealed today (the 3rd) that the Taiwan version of LINE VOOM will formally shut down this September. The company warns users who wish to preserve their past text posts, photos, and videos to promptly use the official backup tool to download their content, or risk losing access permanently after the service ends.
LINE has announced the closure of a major service, stating that posting, Stories, and follower-related functions will be terminated simultaneously. According to the official announcement, the Taiwan version of LINE VOOM will cease operations starting September 30, 2026. From that date onward, users will no longer be able to publish or view any posts, including Stories, birthday cards, and all following and fan engagement features.
For users wishing to retain their historical content, LINE provides an official backup tool to download past texts, photos, and videos. However, each account is limited to only one backup request. Any new content added after the backup is completed will not be included in future downloads, so users are advised to ensure all important data is saved before submitting the request.
Users who still want to follow their favorite creators are encouraged by LINE to add them as friends through their 'Official Creator Accounts.' This method only works for creators who have already set up such accounts; those who haven’t cannot be followed this way.
LINE VOOM launched in Taiwan in 2021, aiming to capitalize on the rising popularity of short-form video content and compete with fast-growing platforms like TikTok and YouTube Shorts. In its early stages, LINE invited numerous content creators to join, hoping to build a vibrant video content ecosystem within the LINE platform. However, amid fierce competition from Facebook, Instagram Reels, and YouTube Shorts, LINE VOOM failed to establish a distinct advantage.
Moreover, the platform long suffered from an influx of low-quality content and scam messages. Since the feature was directly integrated into the main LINE app and could not be manually disabled or hidden by users, many expressed frustration, criticizing it as 'the most frequently accidentally tapped function.' As LINE restructures its global service strategy, LINE VOOM has now been discontinued in Japan and Thailand, and Taiwan will officially bid farewell to this nearly five-year-old short-video feature by the end of September 2026.
Many netizens have responded positively, saying: 'VOOM is truly the most useless feature on LINE, hands down,' 'I specifically gave it one star on the App Store just to delete it,' 'Finally, the center Voom button is gone—I won’t get startled by loud Chinese videos anymore,' 'They said it’s a phased update; I hope mine updates soon because accidentally tapping it was so embarrassing,' 'Among all annoying features, LINE VOOM stands out the most,' 'This is truly great news—LINE VOOM shutting down,' 'A nuisance and data-consuming feature is finally disappearing,' and 'Finally, that useless thing is gone.' Overall, public sentiment strongly welcomes the decision.
