Currently, watching TV shows at home usually requires a monthly subscription fee. However, the streaming video landscape is undergoing significant changes due to the aggressive rise of YouTube.

According to foreign media outlet Business Insider, Hollywood streaming giants such as Disney (Disney+) and Paramount are actively evaluating the introduction of 'free plans.' Even Greg Peters, Co-CEO of Netflix, acknowledged during a financial results conference that 'free plans are feasible in certain markets.' These platforms aim to attract hesitant users through zero-cost access, thereby expanding their viewer base and securing advertising revenue.

YouTube Emerges as the Biggest Threat! Short Videos and Podcasts Erode Streaming Giants' Viewership

The report analyzes that the primary reason these streaming giants are seriously considering free plans is the immense threat posed by YouTube. Google's free platform hosts millions of creators, and its user engagement and market share continue to grow year after year, severely eating into the growth potential of paid platforms. Additionally, new media formats such as short videos and podcasts are constantly competing for modern audiences’ attention, forcing Netflix and Disney to directly confront this battle for viewership.

Disney Internally Acknowledges Idea for First Time; Netflix Continues Evaluation! Cannibalizing Paid Subscribers Is Top Concern

Business Insider reveals that Adam Smith, Chief Product and Technology Officer at Disney, first introduced the concept of a free membership tier to employees during an internal meeting. The goal is to eliminate payment barriers, encourage users to open the app regularly, and eventually convert them into paying subscribers. Meanwhile, Paramount has already initiated action in internal presentations, planning to offer select series for free viewing.

Greg Peters, Co-CEO of Netflix, emphasized during a public earnings call that while there are no immediate plans to launch a free plan, he admitted it could indeed be viable in certain markets. 'Our main concern right now is cannibalizing our own paid subscriber base—we need to ensure long-term revenue goals aren't compromised. But we also need to assess whether target countries have sufficient advertising markets to sustain a free membership model. We will continue evaluating the possibility.'
