A major breakthrough has emerged in the Democratic Progressive Party's (DPP) 2026 Taitung County magistrate election campaign. After the DPP nominated incumbent legislator Chen Ying to run for Taitung County magistrate, former legislator Liao Chao-hao, who had previously insisted on running as an independent candidate, announced his withdrawal. Today (4th), Liao appeared alongside former President Tsai Ing-wen at Chen Ying's campaign office, officially announcing the successful unification of the green camp.
During the event, it was confirmed that Tsai Ing-wen will serve as Chairperson of Chen Ying's campaign headquarters, while Liao Chao-hao will take on the role of Chief of Staff, showcasing a strong display of unity within the green camp.
Chen Ying stated that the greatest achievement of today is unity, emphasizing that Taitung can no longer afford internal divisions. She expressed gratitude to Liao Chao-hao for making this decision after careful consideration, noting that regardless of their positions, their shared goal is to improve Taitung. Chen also mentioned that she and Liao were colleagues in the Legislative Yuan, and during grassroots visits, many locals still expressed fondness and appreciation for Liao. She believes that "one plus one will be greater than two," and this outcome will energize supporters. She pledged to focus fully on the campaign moving forward. Additionally, Chen expressed special thanks to Tsai Ing-wen for accepting the role of campaign chairperson, joking that she had "secured the first blessing."
Liao Chao-hao extended his blessings to Chen Ying, wishing her swift success. He stated that since announcing his withdrawal, he has received encouragement and well-wishes from many friends, for which he expressed sincere gratitude. He pledged to fully assist with the campaign headquarters' operations and expressed hope that everyone could work together to make Taitung better.
Tsai Ing-wen, assuming the role of campaign chairperson, admitted that this was not a role she was previously familiar with, but expressed hope that it would help the Taitung campaign and consolidate greater unity. Tsai particularly thanked Liao Chao-hao for proactively facilitating this cooperation, highlighting his sincerity and broad-mindedness. She emphasized that Liao's decision not to run and to serve as chief of staff was the result of long-term reflection. "Politics inherently involves competition, but more importantly, we must unite for the sake of our local communities and find a common direction," she stated.
