Ko Wen-je, former chairman of the Taiwan People's Party and ex-mayor of Taipei, was sentenced to 17 years in the first instance for his involvement in the Jinghua City case and other charges. Both the prosecution and defense have appealed to the Taiwan High Court, and the latest hearing schedule has been announced: the first hearing will be held on September 8 at 3:00 PM, where Ko Wen-je and others will be summoned for preparatory procedures.
The panel has also ruled that Ko Wen-je’s technological monitoring device will be changed from an electronic ankle monitor to a wristband, effective tomorrow until January 14 next year. Ko will visit the Ren'ai Road Police Station, Zhongzheng First Branch, Taipei City Police Department, at 10:00 AM tomorrow to replace the monitoring device.
Ko Wen-je was involved in the Jinghua City and political donation cases. On March 26, the Taipei District Court delivered its first-instance verdict: Ko was convicted of bribery and embezzlement, sentenced to 17 years in prison and deprived of civil rights for 6 years. Other defendants include KMT Taipei City Councilor Ying Hsiao-wei, sentenced to 15 years and 6 months; Wei Ching Group Chairman Shen Ching-ching, sentenced to 10 years; and six others received sentences ranging from 1 year to 6 years and 6 months.
To prepare for the second trial, Ko Wen-je has replaced his legal team. Only lawyer Cheng Shen-yuan remains from the first-instance team, while Lu Cheng-i and Hsiao Yi-hung have been replaced by Lin Shih-meng, former judge of the Kaohsiung High Administrative Court, and Kuan Kao-yueh, former Chief Prosecutor of the High Prosecutors Office.
The High Court, following the 'Criminal Case Assignment Guidelines,' assigned the case via computer lottery, selecting the judges and panel members. The presiding judge is Lu Ning-li (Class 37), the chief judge is Chiu Tzu-shan (Judicial Academy Class 35), and the associate judge is Liu Chao-chu (Class 39).
