Moderate Typhoon Dolphin continues moving westward, with a gale radius reaching 320 kilometers, posing a potential threat to Taiwan's weather. Lin Bo-Dong, Section Chief at the Central Weather Administration's Forecast Center, explained that Dolphin is currently advancing west at 20 kilometers per hour. Influenced by the development of mid-latitude systems and the eastward retreat of high pressure, the typhoon is more likely to turn north after passing the Ryukyu Islands near northern Taiwan. However, international forecast models still differ on the exact timing of the turn, and the subsequent path requires continuous close monitoring.
Lin emphasized that even if Dolphin successfully turns northward later, the radius of its 7-level gale-force winds could remain around 300 kilometers as it approaches Taiwan. If the future path comes closer to northeastern offshore waters than expected, the Central Weather Administration may issue a sea typhoon warning. The public is urged not to let their guard down.
How will the weekend weather change? Which days will see the heaviest rainfall?
Regarding recent weather trends, Lin stated that today and tomorrow will maintain typical summer conditions across Taiwan, with hot daytime temperatures and localized afternoon thunderstorms. Mountainous areas may also experience heavier rainfall. From tomorrow to the day after, increased moisture will bring scattered brief showers to central and southern regions during early morning to mid-morning hours.
As Dolphin gradually approaches, starting Friday (7th), outer cloud bands will sweep across western Taiwan, significantly increasing the chance of rain. Localized heavy rain is possible in northern mountainous areas and near-mountain regions of central and southern Taiwan. Saturday and Sunday (8th and 9th) will be the closest approach of Dolphin to Taiwan, with the most intense rainfall expected in northern mountainous areas, potentially reaching heavy or torrential levels. Northern lowlands and central mountainous areas should also remain alert for heavy rain.
When will the typhoon leave? Will the weather stabilize next week?
This rainfall is expected to last through the weekend. Lin mentioned that as Dolphin gradually moves away by Monday (10th), rainfall trends across Taiwan are expected to slowly ease. However, after the typhoon departs, southwest winds will bring continued rainfall chances to central and southern regions. People are advised to carry rain gear when going out.
