Taichung City's efforts in human-centered transportation development have once again borne fruit. On the 5th, the Ministry of the Interior held the '2026 Malu Haoxing' Awards Ceremony and Forum, where Taichung stood out in the national evaluation, securing a total of 10 awards. These include one 'Outstanding,' one 'Commendable,' and five 'Honorable Mentions' in engineering projects, along with three 'Individual Contribution Awards' and a 'Public Service Award.' The number of awards surpasses the previous edition, setting a new historical high.

Chen Da-tian, Director of Taichung City Government's Construction Bureau, explained that since Mayor Lu Hsiu-yen took office, pedestrian safety has been a top priority, with active promotion of the 'Prosperous Taichung, Pedestrian Safety' policy. Continuous measures such as widening sidewalks, installing refuge islands, retracting crosswalks, consolidating utility zones, and improving school walking routes have significantly enhanced pedestrian accessibility and comfort.

This year’s 'Malu Haoxing' evaluation increased from nine to ten awards, marking another milestone. Chen expressed gratitude to the central review panel for recognizing Taichung’s achievements in human-centric environmental construction and educational outreach, and also thanked the city government team, district offices, and local partners for their collaborative efforts. Moving forward, the Construction Bureau will continue to uphold the principles of 'high quality, high efficiency,' and 'safety first,' actively seeking central government subsidies to create safer, more comfortable, and pedestrian-friendly road environments.

The Construction Bureau highlighted the substantial outcomes of both engineering and educational initiatives. The 'Qingshui Junior High School Surrounding Pedestrian Environment Improvement Project – Yuan Campus' in Qingshui District received the highest honor of 'Outstanding.' The 'Zhongming South Road (Nantun Section 1 to Kuanghua Road) Road Improvement Project' in South District earned the 'Commendable' award. Additionally, five projects — 'Jinhua North Road (Zhongqing Road to Chongde Road) Road, Co-pole Installation, and Sidewalk Improvement Project' in North District, 'Jianxing Elementary School Surrounding Commuter Route and Sidewalk Improvement Project' in North District, '2025 Taichung City Human-Oriented Road Environment Policy Development Forum and Student Design Competition,' 'Taichung City Human-Centered Transportation Education Program under the “Road Quality Enhancement Plan 2.0,”' and the 'Taichung City Crash Mapping System Establishment Project' — all received 'Honorable Mentions,' showcasing Taichung’s comprehensive achievements in human-centered infrastructure, traffic education, and innovative governance.

Beyond engineering accomplishments, the dedication of local communities and frontline personnel was also recognized. Cheng Sheng-chieh, Village Chief of Beishi Village in Shakeng District, played an active role as a communication bridge between the construction team and residents during project implementation, earning the 'Public Service Award.' Yang Yi-hsi, Section Chief of Qingshui District Office, and Yeh Hsing-chien, Team Leader of the Maintenance Engineering Division at the Construction Bureau, were both awarded the 'Individual Contribution Award' for their outstanding involvement and performance throughout the project rollout, demonstrating Taichung City’s holistic strength in human-centered transportation development — from engineering and policy to on-the-ground execution and community collaboration.
