It is estimated that one in three people in Taiwan suffers from fatty liver, which, if left untreated, can progress to cirrhosis or even liver cancer. On a health program, family physician Dr. Hsu Shu-Hua shared the case of a 35-year-old female engineer at a gaming company who, due to prolonged sitting and high work pressure, often skipped meals or ate poorly during the day and indulged in heavy dinners and late-night snacks to relieve stress. This led to rapid weight gain and a diagnosis of moderate to severe fatty liver, with elevated liver enzyme levels (GOT and GPT).
Although she occasionally did strength training, her weight-loss approach was fundamentally flawed:
1. Extreme dietary mistake: She followed an extreme 'no-carb' diet, completely eliminating carbohydrates.
2. High-fat protein intake: After workouts, she consumed large amounts of high-fat red meat, leading to excessive calorie and fat intake.
This incorrect method not only failed to reduce her weight but also resulted in alarming liver test results.
To help her recover, Dr. Hsu designed a 12-week customized lifestyle and dietary adjustment plan. By following these six key principles, the engineer successfully reversed her fatty liver, dropping from 65kg to 54kg (11kg lost), and reducing her body fat percentage from 37% to 26%:
1. Adjust meal order: Vegetables → Protein → Carbohydrates
Eat vegetables first, then protein, and finally carbohydrates. This helps stabilize blood sugar fluctuations and prolongs the feeling of fullness.
2. Mindful eating: Eat until 70% full, chew 20 times per bite
Focus on the taste of food during meals, avoiding distractions like watching TV or working. Develop the habit of stopping at 70% fullness and chewing each bite 20 times.
3. Choose whole-food carbohydrates: Don’t blindly cut carbs
Instead of eliminating carbs entirely, replace refined carbohydrates with whole-food options like brown rice, oats, and sweet potatoes to provide steady energy.
4. Stay hydrated: Drink 40ml per kg of body weight
Adequate hydration is essential for weight loss and metabolism. Daily water intake should be 'body weight (kg) × 40ml'.
5. Improve sleep: Get 7 hours of sleep
Ensure at least 7 hours of sleep each night to support metabolic health.
6. Diversify exercise
Combine 'walking for fat burning,' 'strength training for muscle gain,' and 'yoga for stretching.' Use spare moments for 1–2 minutes of jumping jacks or climbing three flights of stairs.
