With four months remaining until the 2026 local elections, the mayoral race in Taipei, a key battleground, has intensified. Incumbent KMT mayor Chiang Wan-an has been aggressively asserting political influence, recently mobilizing public protests on Ketagalan Boulevard on July 25 against the 'toxic oil' scandal and subsequently proposing a vote of no confidence in the cabinet. Meanwhile, DPP candidate and legislator Shen Po-yang has launched his campaign visual identity, centering his platform on the slogan 'Your Mayor.'
A widely discussed online poll conducted by Apple Daily News has now concluded, revealing a dramatic reversal: Chiang Wan-an, who previously trailed significantly, has now overtaken Shen Po-yang with 51.7% support versus 46.7%, a lead of 5.1 percentage points.
The poll, launched on July 29 by Apple Daily News, asked, 'Both Chiang Wan-an and Shen Po-yang are actively seeking public attention—whom do you support as Taipei mayor?' Over approximately one week, by early August 1, Shen Po-yang led with 2,812 votes (55.7%), while Chiang received 2,078 votes (41.2%), a gap of 14.6 percentage points. Another 158 voters (3.1%) remained undecided. The survey explicitly stated that results reflect only the opinions of participants and were not based on scientific polling methods.
Notably, in the early stages of the survey, Shen Po-yang enjoyed a staggering 68% support, crushing Chiang Wan-an’s 27.3% by a 40-point margin—sparking heated online discussion. Media personalities shared the results with sarcasm: 'Not just me should see this!' 'Winning hands down!' Netizens mocked, 'Might as well aim for 100%' and 'Only 68%? That’s too low!'
The poll closed on August 6 with around 30,000 total votes. Final results show Chiang Wan-an securing approximately 15,000 votes (51.7%), Shen Po-yang 14,000 votes (46.7%), and 484 undecided (1.6%). The gap has narrowed dramatically, suggesting Chiang’s strategic moves gained traction.
