Ceiling scaffolding and art installation collapse at Nangang LaLaport in Taipei; Mitsui issues official statement

On the afternoon of the 7th, a major incident occurred at Mitsui's shopping center 'LaLaport' in Nangang District, Taipei. A large-scale painted aircraft nose of Starlux Airlines' A330neo, installed inside the KidZania attraction on the 5th floor, along with an art installation simulating airport immigration procedures, suddenly collapsed. The structure, suspended from the ceiling, detached due to unknown causes and fell directly from the 5th floor to the 3rd floor. A loud crash echoed through the mall, debris scattered across the floor, and shoppers and visitors were shocked.

According to reports, Mitsui stated that 'no casualties have been confirmed at this time.' However, joint investigations are underway by police and the facility management to determine whether there were issues with the structure, installation method, or inspection protocols. The affected area has been immediately cordoned off for safety assessments.

The installation was part of an experiential attraction in collaboration with Starlux Airlines, allowing children to simulate boarding procedures and immigration checks, making it a popular attraction. Following the incident, Mitsui released an official statement saying, 'We prioritize customer safety above all and will fully investigate the cause and implement measures to prevent recurrence.'

LaLaport Nangang, opened in 2023, is a large-scale urban commercial complex and a key component of Mitsui Fudosan's expansion strategy in Asia. This incident may impact public trust in the safety management systems of commercial facilities, and the company's future response is under close observation.
