With the 2026 'Urban Resilience Drill' set to begin in August, the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) has launched its 'Resilient Taiwan' series, sharing guidance on household preparedness for disasters and other emergencies. AIT specifically advises that emergency go-bags include seven essential categories of supplies and be stored in easily accessible locations such as near the front door, with at least a three-day supply of drinking water and non-perishable food.
What Should Be in an Emergency Go-Bag?
AIT emphasizes, 'When a disaster or emergency strikes unexpectedly, what can you do to stay calm and prepared?' Individuals should pre-assemble seven key categories: important documents, water and food, backup finances, spare keys, electronic devices, evacuation plans, and survival and medical supplies.
Important documents should include photocopies of identification cards, passports, and insurance records. Backup finances should consist of cash and bank cards, along with spare keys for homes and vehicles. For electronics, AIT recommends including phone charging cables, power banks, flashlights, and hand-crank or battery-powered radios to cope with power outages or communication disruptions.
Prepare at Least Three Days of Food and Water – Don’t Forget Paper Maps
For food and water, AIT recommends stocking at least a three-day supply of drinking water and non-perishable food. Medical and survival supplies should include prescription medications, basic first-aid kits, warm clothing, and emergency whistles. Additionally, residents should keep paper maps of their local area and pre-arrange family meeting points and communication methods in case of emergencies.
AIT also recommends downloading the 'Fire & Disaster e-Connect' and 'Police Services' apps in advance to familiarize oneself with nearby evacuation centers, avoiding last-minute information searches during crises.
Why Emphasize National Resilience? Greene Highlights Taiwan’s Strengths
Raymond Greene, Director of AIT Taipei Branch, previously noted Taiwan’s social resilience, stating, 'Strengthening societal resilience directly contributes to global peace and prosperity.' He highlighted Taiwan’s long-standing traditions of volunteerism and civic engagement as strong foundations for enhancing societal resilience.
