Known as the 'Taiwan Berkshire' and the 'stock picker,' Longyen, the leader in Taiwan's funeral industry, reported a remarkable increase in net assets of NT$2.524 billion (up 8.78% quarter-on-quarter) in Q2, pushing its book value per share from NT$68.39 to NT$74.40—a jump of NT$6.01 per share in just one quarter. Yet, its quarterly EPS was only NT$0.74. How could book value rise so sharply on such modest earnings?
Financial expert Yeh Yu-shuo revealed the secret on Facebook: the key lies in Longyen’s equity investments. Rather than simply parking pre-need contract revenues in banks, Longyen actively invests in stocks—especially during the pandemic—focusing exclusively on high-performing tech giants in Taiwan and the U.S.:
- Taiwan stocks: TSMC, Largan Precision, Quanta Computer - U.S. stocks: Alphabet (Google), Microsoft, Berkshire Hathaway, Amazon, Visa, Intel
Yeh noted that in May, Longyen sold 87,500 shares of Intel at an average price of USD 118.89 per share, realizing a gain of approximately NT$205 million. This profit wasn’t fully reflected in the quarterly EPS but was transferred from 'other comprehensive income' under shareholders’ equity to retained earnings. After the sale, Longyen still holds around 131,500 shares of Intel.
Thus, the Q2 net asset surge wasn’t driven by operating earnings but by unrealized gains from rising stock prices and realized gains from disposals. This explains the divergence between a modest NT$0.74 EPS and a NT$6.01 increase in book value per share.
Yeh emphasized that Longyen’s true value may no longer lie in tombstones but in its quietly accumulated portfolio of tech stocks. 'Don’t think you’re buying a funeral stock,' he said. 'You’re buying a basket of U.S. tech giants.' He personally holds Longyen shares for this reason.
However, Yeh also warned of downside risks: stock price declines would directly reduce net assets. While the strategy has paid off recently, volatility remains a key risk.
