The US stock market is undergoing a major transformation. Nasdaq has announced that its 'Global Trading Hours' 23-hour trading system will officially launch on December 6, 2026. This will enable the US stock market to operate five days a week with only one hour of closure per day, significantly affecting global investors.

Seamless Two-Phase Trading: Day and Night Sessions with Just One Hour of Downtime

Paul Atkins, Chair of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), recently revealed in an exclusive interview with Yahoo Finance that the SEC will begin exploring plans this fall to implement a new trading schedule for U.S. equities: five days a week, 23 hours a day.

According to Nasdaq's plan, the new system will be divided into two trading sessions: a daytime session and a nighttime session. The daytime session will run from 4:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time, while the nighttime session will continue from 9:00 p.m. to 4:00 a.m. the following day, with only a one-hour break from 8:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. This upgrade has already received SEC approval and is currently awaiting system upgrades from the Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation (DTCC) and the Securities Information Processors (SIP) to support clearing and nighttime operations.

Expanding Global Investor Participation: Nasdaq Emphasizes Order and Trust

Regarding this major reform, Chuck Mack, Senior Vice President of Nasdaq's North American Markets, stated, 'This reform is not just about extending trading hours. We aim to expand opportunities for global investors to participate in the U.S. stock market, allowing investors across different time zones to trade conveniently while maintaining market trust and trading order.'
