Xu Chunying, who was considered by Taiwan's People First Party for inclusion in its party-list legislative candidate list at the end of 2023, has been convicted of using her position as chairperson of the Taiwan New Residents Development Association to long-term collect political intelligence and public opinion in Taiwan under the direction of Chinese Communist Party officials. During the recent election, she publicly supported candidates such as Ko Wen-je with campaign speeches.
Additionally, she was found guilty of fraudulently obtaining loans, operating underground remittance services, and assisting Chinese officials in illegally entering Taiwan under false business pretenses. Prosecutors had sought a 21.5-year prison sentence under the Anti-Infiltration Act and other charges.
On April 11, the New Taipei District Court concluded the first-instance trial and sentenced Xu Chunying to seven years in prison. The court ruled that her actions posed a serious threat to Taiwan's national security and democratic processes, but imposed a significantly reduced sentence compared to the prosecution's request.
