On the 7th day of the Han Kuang Exercise, the Military Police Reserve conducted drills from 11:00 PM on the 10th to 12:00 AM on the 11th in the southern section of the Fuxing North Road Underpass in Taipei City, simulating 'mid-level protection of Songshan Airport.' The drill took place at the intersection of Fuxing North Road and Minzu East Road, assuming an enemy airborne landing at Songshan Airport and subsequent infiltration into the city. The Military Police Reserve deployed forces around the southern exit of the underpass to block enemy advances toward the Keelung River.
All participants were reservists—14-day 'jiao zhao' conscripts—who simulated 'enemy contact.' Approximately 60 troops assembled and conducted blank-firing exercises using T91 rifles, primarily testing reserve mobilization capabilities in urban areas.
The drill began assembling around 10:00 PM, with alert deployment at 11:40 PM. At 11:45 PM, simulated enemy forces were detected, and troops opened fire from multiple positions toward the fan-shaped area around the underpass exit. The exercise concluded at 12:10 AM, followed by troop assembly. Notably, in addition to ground-level firing, one unit was deployed on the rooftop of a nearby residential building, firing toward the airport from an elevated position.
Due to the drill, traffic inside the Fuxing North Road Underpass was fully closed, with restrictions also imposed on traffic from the south toward Fuxing North Road and from east-west routes toward Minzu East Road. As the area is residential, a small number of civilians gathered to observe, and passing cars and delivery riders were present, though all were redirected by military personnel. Some residents, startled by gunfire, called the police, prompting two officers from the nearby Jianguo Police Station to arrive in a patrol car. After receiving explanations from the military, they left.
Military expert Shi Xiaowei, who observed the drill, noted that the Chinese military possesses the capability to conduct airborne assaults using helicopters to deploy troops and all-terrain vehicles, which could carry man-portable air-defense systems or anti-armor weapons. In such scenarios, defensive forces must deploy at key points or critical interception zones to block fast-moving enemy units.
Military scholar Jie Zhong stated that conducting blank-firing drills near residential areas is challenging for the military, but blocking key transportation routes from elevated civilian rooftops is a rational and realistic design. He added that all on-site personnel were 14-day 'jiao zhao' conscripts, and with the increasing number of one-year conscripts, the Military Police indeed has expansion plans, possibly forming dedicated guard units from one-year conscripts in the future.
