The US Bureau of Labor Statistics released the July Consumer Price Index (CPI) at 8:30 PM Taiwan time today (12th), showing a year-on-year increase of 3.4%, the smallest rise since March, matching market expectations. After the data release, stock index futures, gold prices, and US Treasury yields experienced heightened volatility. As of the time of reporting, Taiwan index futures in night trading rose over 600 points, breaking above the 46,100 threshold.
Last Friday’s unexpectedly soft non-farm payrolls report reduced market expectations for a Federal Reserve (Fed) rate hike, making the latest inflation data a crucial indicator for monetary policy direction. According to statistics, the unadjusted July CPI rose 3.4% year-on-year, the smallest increase since March; seasonally adjusted CPI rose 0.1% month-on-month, returning to positive growth.
Core CPI, which excludes volatile food and energy categories, rose 2.5% year-on-year, the smallest increase since February; seasonally adjusted core CPI rose 0.2% month-on-month, a slight rebound from the previous month. Market analysts noted that the data met expectations, with July core inflation showing moderate trends, potentially easing pressure on the Fed to raise rates. However, ahead of the September rate decision meeting, the August employment and inflation reports will be critical in determining whether Fed officials can truly relax.
Economists predict that consumer prices may accelerate in August due to recent oil price increases. At the same time, as seasonal distortions fade, employment growth could rebound.
