Taiwan enjoys a wide variety of fruits year-round, with bananas, pineapples, mangoes, and guavas being common household purchases. But when comparing annual production volume, which fruit truly reigns supreme in Taiwan?

Based on the 'Agricultural Production Value' data from the Council of Agriculture's '113 Agricultural Yearbook,' pineapple led domestic fruit production in 2024 with an annual output exceeding 358,548 metric tons. Bananas ranked second with nearly 279,348 tons, while guava, mango, and papaya all made it into the top five.

This ranking is based on the 2024 annual production volume of fruit crops, ordered from highest to lowest, using data from the Council of Agriculture's '113 Agricultural Yearbook.' It should be noted that in agricultural statistics, watermelon, melon, oriental melon, and strawberries are categorized under 'vegetable fruits' and other crop categories, not classified as 'fruits,' and thus were excluded from this ranking. The Council of Agriculture defines 'production volume' as the total actual harvest of each crop over the year.

Taiwan Domestic Fruit Production Ranking – 10th Place: Grapes, 60,771 metric tons Grapes ranked 10th. According to Council of Agriculture statistics, Taiwan's grape production in 2024 was 60,771 metric tons, a decrease of approximately 5.8% from 64,499 tons in 2023. Although significantly smaller in scale compared to pineapples and bananas, which produce hundreds of thousands of tons, grapes still secured a spot in the top 10 domestic fruit producers.

Taiwan Domestic Fruit Production Ranking – 9th Place: Pomelo (Wen Dan You), 64,783 metric tons Pomelo ranked 9th, with a 2024 production volume of approximately 64,783 metric tons, down about 11.6% from 73,273 tons in the previous year. In terms of volume, pomelo slightly exceeded grapes and remains a significant domestically produced citrus fruit.

Taiwan Domestic Fruit Production Ranking – 8th Place: Pear, 84,481 metric tons Pears ranked 8th with 84,481 metric tons. Compared to 88,409 tons in 2023, this represents a decrease of about 4.4%, one of the smallest year-on-year declines among the top 10. Annual production remains steadily above 80,000 metric tons.

Taiwan Domestic Fruit Production Ranking – 7th Place: Ponkan (Ponkan Mandarin), 92,381 metric tons Ponkan ranked 7th, with a 2024 production volume of 92,381 metric tons, just shy of 100,000 tons. Compared to 101,636 tons in 2023, production decreased by about 9.1%, yet it still surpassed pears, pomelos, and grapes.

Taiwan Domestic Fruit Production Ranking – 6th Place: Liucheng Orange, 98,246 metric tons Liucheng oranges produced 98,246 metric tons in 2024, ranking 6th. Production had previously reached 122,163 tons in 2023 but dropped by about 19.6% in 2024, falling below the 100,000-ton threshold. Nonetheless, it remains in the upper tier among domestic fruits.

Taiwan Domestic Fruit Production Ranking – 5th Place: Papaya, 105,611 metric tons Entering the top five, all fruits exceed 100,000 metric tons annually. Papaya produced 105,611 metric tons in 2024, down about 13.9% from 122,690 tons in 2023. Papaya became the fifth fruit on this list to surpass the 100,000-ton mark.

Taiwan Domestic Fruit Production Ranking – 4th Place: Mango, 132,187 metric tons Mango, a summer favorite for many, ranked 4th with a total production of 132,187 metric tons across Taiwan in 2024. However, compared to 183,599 tons in 2023, this represents a decrease of about 28%, one of the most significant declines among the top 10. Despite this, mango production remained solidly above 130,000 metric tons.

Taiwan Domestic Fruit Production Ranking – 3rd Place: Guava, 165,484 metric tons Guava, commonly known as 'bālè,' claimed 3rd place with a 2024 production volume of 165,484 metric tons—one of only three fruits on the list exceeding 150,000 tons. Production in 2023 was 187,412 tons, a decrease of about 11.7% in 2024.

Taiwan Domestic Fruit Production Ranking – 2nd Place: Banana, 279,348 metric tons Banana is the second-highest fruit in terms of production volume in Taiwan, reaching 279,348 metric tons in annual output for 2024. This is over 110,000 metric tons more than third-place guava, a significant gap. However, banana production in 2023 was 333,430 tons, meaning a decrease of about 16.2% in 2024. Despite the decline, it maintains second place with a volume close to 280,000 metric tons.

Taiwan Domestic Fruit Production Ranking – 1st Place: Pineapple, 358,548 metric tons The fruit with the highest production in Taiwan is not banana or mango, but pineapple. According to Council of Agriculture statistics, Taiwan's pineapple production in 2024 reached 358,548 metric tons—about 79,200 tons more than second-place banana—securing its position as the top domestically produced fruit. In 2023, pineapple production was 378,620 tons, a decrease of about 5.3% in 2024, yet it remains the only fruit to exceed 350,000 metric tons in annual output.

How astonishing is this number? According to Ministry of the Interior data, Taiwan's population at the end of 2024 was approximately 23,400,220. If the 358,548 metric tons of pineapple were evenly distributed among the entire population, it would amount to about 15.3 kilograms per person. However, this is merely a scale illustration using 'domestic production ÷ population' and should not be interpreted as every Taiwanese person actually consuming 15.3 kilograms of pineapple per year, as production also goes toward exports, processing, and may incur losses.

In total, the combined production of the top 10 fruits—pineapple, banana, guava, mango, papaya, liucheng orange, ponkan, pear, pomelo, and grapes—reached approximately 1,441,840 metric tons in 2024. Pineapple and banana form a clear leading group, together accounting for over 630,000 metric tons, reflecting the massive scale of these two fruits in Taiwan's agricultural production.
