According to the latest data from Second Talent (ST), a talent and employer platform focused on the Asian market, a notable shift is emerging in global tech talent recruitment by 2026.

Companies from the United States, Europe, the UK, and Australia—especially those in the technology sector—are intensifying their efforts to recruit 'Forward Deployed Engineers' (FDEs) and related roles from Asia. The primary reason is straightforward and pragmatic: substantial salary cost advantages, high operational efficiency, and the 'just right' working time zones.

What is a Forward Deployed Engineer?

Unlike traditional remote outsourcing, which often involves physical and operational distance, these 'forward deployed hires' integrate directly into the client’s internal team and systems after being hired. They participate in daily stand-up meetings, use the client’s development tools, and are held accountable for outcomes just like internal employees.

Take the FDE role, for example: they write production code within the client’s environment, assist with system integration, and remain involved throughout the product launch process.

Recruitment platform data reveals that, as of August 2026, over 2,050 FDE candidates from various Asian countries have registered on the platform. In terms of compensation, entry-level FDEs in Asia earn approximately USD 2,000 to 3,000 per month (about JPY 644,000 to 970,000), mid-level professionals earn between USD 2,800 and 4,500 (JPY 900,000 to 1.45 million), and senior engineers command salaries ranging from USD 4,500 to 6,000 (JPY 1.45 million to 1.93 million). Candidates with chief engineer experience can begin negotiations at USD 6,000 per month and above.

When comparing salary levels across Asian countries, Singapore sits at the top of the pay pyramid, while Vietnam and the Philippines fall within the entry-level range. For Western tech firms, hiring an equally qualified engineer domestically in the U.S. would incur monthly salaries of USD 8,000 to 18,000 (approximately JPY 2.57 million to 5.8 million). Sourcing talent from Asia allows them to maintain quality while reducing salary expenses by over 60%.

Overcoming Time Zone Barriers for Real-Time Collaboration

The platform also emphasizes that salary cost is not the only consideration. These embedded roles heavily depend on real-time collaboration. Asia shares a 4- to 6-hour overlap with the U.S. East Coast and a 6- to 8-hour overlap with the U.S. West Coast. Similarly, there is a 6- to 8-hour workday overlap with Europe, the UK, and Australia.

Observations show that most U.S. clients typically start by hiring one FDE. Once integration is complete and operations are running smoothly, they rapidly expand to a cross-border team of 3 to 5 members within the first quarter.

Especially amid the rising artificial intelligence (AI) boom, demand for such talent is skyrocketing. However, the on-site model inherently involves international operations, raising challenges related to data access security, intellectual property rights (IP), and cross-border labor regulations—issues that companies cannot afford to ignore.
