Influenced by monsoon circulation, persistent southwest winds, and an ensuing low-pressure zone, moist air from the South China Sea continues to flow into Taiwan. Meteorological experts and the Central Weather Administration have issued warnings that, starting today through next week, rapid and severe weather changes are highly likely across all regions of Taiwan. Southern and central areas must remain vigilant against sudden showers, while northern regions and mountainous areas should prepare for intense afternoon thunderstorms. During non-rainy periods, heat indices will soar, so the public is urged to carry rain gear and practice sun protection whenever going outdoors.

According to the latest simulations from the European model (ECMWF) and data analysis from the Central Weather Administration, from today until Saturday (15th), Taiwan will be under the influence of monsoon circulation, resulting in strong southwest winds around the island that simultaneously draw in moisture from the South China Sea. Atmospheric conditions are highly unstable, with the most significant rainfall occurring in southwestern windward areas. The Central Weather Administration has already issued heavy rain alerts for seven southern and central counties—Nantou, Yunlin, Chiayi, Tainan, Kaohsiung, and Pingtung—with a high probability of localized downpours from early morning to midday.

Northern and central regions will generally see cloudy to partly sunny skies during daytime hours, but thermal effects in the afternoon will easily trigger strong convection, leading to short-duration heavy rainfall and isolated downpours. In between rainfall events, temperatures across Taiwan will remain high and sweltering. Northern areas could reach highs of 37°C, while central, southern, and eastern regions will hover between 35°C and 36°C. The Central Weather Administration has issued high-temperature advisories for seven counties—Keelung, Taipei, New Taipei, Changhua, Yilan, Hualien, and Taitung—emphasizing that sun protection and hydration are essential.

Starting Sunday, low-pressure band takes over! Strong convection expands across Taiwan—watch for lightning and sudden downpours

From Sunday (16th) through next Saturday (22nd), the initial monsoon circulation will gradually weaken and shift westward, changing Taiwan’s weather pattern to one dominated by a low-pressure band. With abundant moisture still present, atmospheric instability will persist across all regions of Taiwan.

During this period, afternoon convection development will become even more frequent and intense, potentially accompanied by lightning strikes, strong gusts, and sudden torrential downpours. Although daytime feels muggy and hot between rain events, weather changes will be rapid and unpredictable. The public is advised to constantly monitor real-time weather updates and special bulletins issued by the Central Weather Administration. Extra caution is required for those planning outdoor activities in mountainous or riverside areas.

Typhoon No. 17 'Nangka' poses no threat to Taiwan—landfall in Japan also unlikely

Regarding public concerns about typhoon movements, meteorological expert Wu Derong notes that only Typhoon No. 17, a minor typhoon named 'Nangka,' remains active in the northwestern Pacific. Due to its location in an area with strong vertical wind shear, its development is limited, and it will maintain intensity at the lower end of a minimal typhoon.

Path forecasts indicate that 'Nangka' will move along the outer edge of the monsoon circulation toward the sea east of Japan, then turn slightly northward. The likelihood of it making landfall in Japan is low, and its path remains distant from Taiwan, meaning it will have absolutely no direct or indirect impact on Taiwan’s weather.
