U.S. President Donald Trump announced today (the 12th) that White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt will leave her position by the end of the month to have more time with her children and family. She will continue to serve in an advisory capacity outside the administration, and Trump praised her as "one of the best press secretaries in White House history."
Leavitt has served as White House Press Secretary since Trump returned to office last year. At 28 years old, she is the youngest person ever to hold this critical role. She gave birth to her second child in May and returned to work in July after maternity leave, resuming her duties hosting White House press briefings.
Trump posted on his social media platform 'Truth Social' this afternoon, stating that Leavitt, an excellent press secretary and one of his most trusted aides, will step down at the end of the month to focus on her family. He added that she will remain an influential voice within the Republican Party as an external advisor during the Trump administration’s efforts to “break historical patterns and secure a decisive victory in the midterm elections.”
The announcement comes less than three months before the U.S. midterm elections in November—an election widely seen as a midterm evaluation of the Trump administration.
Trump said Leavitt has performed exceptionally since 2018, especially during the historic 2024 campaign, advocating for justice and freedom. He called her "one of the best press secretaries in White House history."
On X, Leavitt stated that serving as White House Press Secretary over the past year and a half has been "the greatest honor and adventure of my life." She expressed gratitude to Trump for trusting her with the privilege of speaking from the White House podium on his behalf. She said she was proud not only to hold liberal media accountable but also to ensure the American people heard the truth about President Trump’s successes.
She continued, reflecting that balancing one of the world’s most demanding jobs while being a mother and welcoming new life has undoubtedly been "the most fulfilling yet most challenging period of my life." After returning to work following the birth of her daughter, she realized that if she continued to dedicate the immense time, energy, and attention required by the press secretary role, she could not be the “best mother” to her two young children—this is why she made the “bittersweet decision” to leave the White House and begin a new chapter in her life.
Leavitt noted that Trump has invited her to continue advising him from outside the administration, and she will always remain an active advocate for the "Make America Great Again" (MAGA) movement and the Republican Party.
During Trump’s first presidential term, Leavitt served as Assistant Press Secretary and was National Press Secretary during the 2024 campaign. She previously revealed on a Fox News podcast that she gave birth to her first child in July 2024.
While serving as press secretary, Leavitt frequently engaged in sharp exchanges with reporters during White House press conferences, staunchly defending Trump’s policies. She also often shared moments of motherhood on Instagram.
