Weather Forecast: End of Good Weather! Three Consecutive Days of Rain Across Taiwan, Heavy Rainfall Expected in Southern Regions – Full Weekly Outlook

Southwesterly winds are strengthening, bringing another round of significant rainfall to Taiwan. According to meteorological information released by the Central Weather Administration, starting today (14th), Taiwan will continue to be affected by southwesterly flows. Central and southern regions are prone to short-duration heavy rainfall, with a chance of localized downpours. Northern and eastern areas should remain vigilant for brief afternoon thunderstorms.

Temperature-wise, highs in the north may reach 36°C, around 34°C in central areas, and approximately 32°C in southern and eastern regions. Matsu, Kinmen, and Penghu are also expected to hover around 32°C.

Today’s Weather Forecast: Southwesterly Winds Bring Abundant Moisture

Dr. Lin De-en, atmospheric science PhD from National Taiwan University, analyzed the situation on his Facebook page “Lin’s Weather Station.” He explained that this week, under the influence of southwesterly winds and a low-pressure trough, atmospheric conditions are unstable with ample moisture, increasing the likelihood of rain across all regions. Not only afternoon storms but also isolated showers in the early morning and evening may occur due to local convergence.

Southern regions, being on the windward side, will experience the most noticeable rainfall, with mountainous areas potentially accumulating substantial precipitation. In central and northern areas, afternoon thermal effects may trigger convective rainfall over both plains and mountains, possibly expanding the rain coverage. Therefore, even if the sky appears clear during the day, sudden weather changes may occur in the afternoon.

Rainfall May Be Sudden and Intense – Mountain Areas Warned of Landslides and Flash Floods

Dr. Lin warns that when airflow converges and moisture supply is sufficient, stronger convective systems can easily develop, sometimes accompanied by lightning. While this rainfall event remains primarily intermittent showers, some areas may experience heavier rain with prolonged duration.

Saturday Weather: Southern Taiwan on Alert for Heavy Rainfall, Sunday Sees Continued Rain in Central and Southern Regions

On August 15 (Saturday), the influence of southwesterly winds continues. The Central Weather Administration forecasts highs of about 35°C in the north, 34°C in central areas, 31°C in the south, and 32°C in the east. Matsu, Kinmen, and Penghu are expected to remain around 32°C. Regarding rainfall, there is a chance of localized heavy rain in central and southern Taiwan, with parts of the south possibly experiencing torrential downpours—making it the area of highest concern during the weekend.

On August 16 (Sunday), highs are forecast at around 35°C in the north, 34°C in central areas, 33°C in the south, and 32°C in the east. Matsu and Kinmen are expected to be around 32°C, and Penghu at 31°C. Central and southern Taiwan remain the primary rainfall zones, with localized heavy rain still possible in northern and northeastern mountainous areas during the afternoon. Outdoor activities should prepare for sudden intensification of rainfall.

Weekly Outlook: Low-Pressure Trough Takes Over – Tropical System Development Remains Uncertain

Starting August 17 (Monday), the environment near Taiwan will shift to a low-pressure trough, keeping rain probabilities high across the island. The Central Weather Administration predicts scattered brief showers along the northern coast of Keelung and in greater Taipei, while areas south of Hsinchu face a chance of localized heavy rain.

Notably, there remains a possibility of tropical disturbances developing within the low-pressure trough. However, current uncertainty regarding system strength, location, and subsequent movement remains high. Whether it will evolve into a tropical system and what level of impact it might have on Taiwan requires ongoing observation.
