The 2026 local elections will impact the 2028 presidential race. Observing the KMT's mayoral candidates, Taichung Mayor Lu Hsiu-yen, whose term is ending, is seen as the blue camp's big chicken. Recently, Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an, who advocates for abolishing the Control Yuan and toppling the cabinet, has gained momentum. Meanwhile, Legislative Yuan Speaker Han Kuo-yu has become a political focal point after suddenly lashing out during cross-party negotiations. Economist Wu Chia-lung on August 14th posted an analysis titled 'The KMT is said to have four suns?! Actually, it's not!' He believes the real sun is Han Kuo-yu.
With the 2026 mayoral election countdown at three months, Lu Hsiu-yen, seen as a hot candidate for the blue camp in 2028, has sparked widespread discussion with her rising momentum alongside Chiang Wan-an. Late last month, Taichung Deputy Mayor Cheng Chao-hsin was asked on the 'Opinion Carrot Bomb War' program about Lu's next steps after her term. He responded, 'I won't disappoint everyone!' KMT legislator Ye Yuan-chih on August 10th stated on a program that Lu's immediate announcement of her 2028 presidential run is 'inevitable,' sparking heated debate. Meanwhile, Han Kuo-yu has become a political focal point after criticizing KMT caucus whip Fu Ko-chiang for repeatedly missing budget negotiations, asking on-site, 'Is this like the Empress Dowager Cixi ruling from behind the curtain?'
Wu named in his post that the media generally considers there to be four suns in the KMT: Lu Hsiu-yen, Chiang Wan-an, Han Kuo-yu, and party chairwoman Zheng Li-wen. As the election cycle begins, many are starting to position themselves. Regarding who is the blue camp's sun, he analyzed that the KMT's political weight comes from controlling the Legislative Yuan, which is the true political stage, not local warlords. Therefore, he believes Lu and Chiang are not suns, just supporting actors. Zheng can influence party nominations, but currently has no say in the Legislative Yuan, let alone being overshadowed by Han's US visit, making her a fake sun as well.
'Therefore, the real sun is Han Kuo-yu!' Wu stated. For Han to become a true role in the KMT's political stage, he must seize the 'real power' of the Legislative Yuan, truly directing its operations, not just being a ceremonial speaker. Therefore, Han must engage in an internal power struggle with Fu, even forcing Fu out, which has also become a hot topic within the KMT recently. But he pointed out that the KMT's real problem is not power struggles, but ideological struggles - whether to be pro-China or pro-America, and where to lead the Taiwanese people. This is what Taiwanese voters truly need to examine. Without solving this problem, whoever comes out in the party won't be useful, as they can't pass the test of the middle voters!
