According to foreign media reports, Second Talent, a talent recruitment platform, released new data in August 2023 revealing a growing trend: global tech firms are actively recruiting 'Forward Deployed Engineers' (FDEs) from Asia. The main reason behind this hiring surge is Asia's significant salary cost advantage and high work efficiency. By embedding Asian engineers directly into client teams and involving them in daily development, companies can dramatically improve operational efficiency amid the AI boom.

FDEs deeply integrated into client core—eliminating the distance of 'remote outsourcing'

Unlike traditional remote outsourcing models that create a sense of distance, Forward Deployed Engineers (FDEs) are frontline on-site professionals. Once hired, these engineers are embedded directly into the client's internal team and systems, attending daily stand-up meetings and using the client's proprietary development tools. They are also held accountable for results at the same level as full-time employees.

An FDE's responsibilities include writing production code directly within the client's project environment, supporting various system integrations, and accompanying the product all the way to its official launch. This deep level of involvement ensures high quality and efficiency in cross-border collaboration.

Asian talent salary structure revealed—top salaries exceed $193,000 JPY monthly

According to statistics from the talent platform, over 2,050 'FDE candidates' from various Asian countries had registered and were awaiting placement as of August.

In terms of salary, entry-level FDEs in Asia earn approximately USD 2,000 to 3,000 per month (about JPY 64,400 to 97,000), mid-level professionals earn USD 2,800 to 4,500 (JPY 90,000 to 145,000), and senior engineers can reach USD 4,500 to 6,000 (JPY 145,000 to 193,000). Candidates with chief engineer experience can start salary negotiations at USD 6,000 or higher.

In contrast, hiring engineers with equivalent qualifications in the US requires paying USD 8,000 to 18,000 per month (approximately JPY 257,000 to 580,000). By sourcing talent from Asia, Western tech firms can maintain engineering quality while reducing salary costs by over 60%. Singapore leads in salary levels across Asia, while Vietnam and the Philippines primarily supply entry-level human resources.

'Work-hour overlap' attracts foreign firms!

In addition to the significant salary cost advantage, 'work-hour time-zone overlap' is another key factor attracting foreign companies. This embedded role heavily relies on real-time team collaboration.

Asia overlaps with the US East Coast by 4–6 hours daily, with the US West Coast by 6–8 hours, and with Europe, the UK, and Australia by 6–8 hours.

The platform observes that most US clients initially hire one Asian FDE, and once workflows are smoothly integrated, they rapidly scale up to a 3–5 person international team within the first quarter.

However, as AI-driven demand for such talent surges, challenges arising from cross-border on-site models—such as data access security, intellectual property protection, and the application of international labor laws—have become critical operational hurdles that Western tech firms must overcome during recruitment.
