Chen Hsing-yu, the eldest daughter of former Taiwan President Chen Shui-bian, has recently confirmed her divorce, drawing renewed public attention to her marital and family situation. On April 15, Chen Shui-bian posted on his official Facebook page 'The New Yung-ko Story,' re-reading a personal letter he wrote to his daughter from Tucheng Prison 17 years ago. He admitted that tears streamed down uncontrollably and delivered an emotional message to his daughter.
Following the news of Chen Hsing-yu's divorce, Chen Shui-bian had previously remained silent. In this latest post, he recalled his daughter's difficult journey of pursuing a Master's degree in Dentistry at National Taiwan University while simultaneously raising children. He emphasized that no matter how many storms she faces, her family will always stand by her.
Chen Shui-bian revealed that the letter was written on January 27, 2009, the second day of the Lunar New Year, while he was detained in Tucheng Prison. Years later, during a quiet night, he rediscovered the letter and found himself reading it over and over again. 'Tears welled up uncontrollably,' he wrote.
Reflecting on his daughter's long-standing pressures from academics, parenting, and family life, Chen Shui-bian said, 'I want to tell my daughter: Hsing-yu, Dad is sorry to you!'
Why did Chen Shui-bian apologize? In the letter, he explained that Chen Hsing-yu's biggest regret was not being able to enter National Taiwan University initially. After completing her internship at Taipei Veterans General Hospital and residency training at Chang Gung Hospital, she was encouraged by Professor Chen Kuan-chih from NTU's College of Medicine to apply for the Master's program in Dentistry.
In the letter, Chen Shui-bian wrote: 'You were determined to study at NTU's dental master's program and also decided to have children. After giving birth, you breastfed while juggling classes. Seeing you carry a breast pump to school and feed your baby with one hand while typing your thesis with the other—your parents' hearts ached, yet we could do nothing to help.'
After three and a half years of relentless effort, Chen Hsing-yu finally graduated. When she donned her master's gown, her sons An-an and Ting-ting attended the ceremony, sharing in the joy of their mother's hard-earned achievement. This story was later included in Chen Shui-bian's prison memoir 'Voices That Cannot Be Silenced,' on page 200.
Facing renewed media attention on his daughter, Chen Shui-bian concluded with a heartfelt message: 'Hsing-yu, you've worked so hard! No matter how much rain and wind you endure, your family will always support you!'
