Chengcing Lake’s lakeside walking network has seen a major advancement! The Kaohsiung City Government’s Public Works Bureau, Road Maintenance Engineering Office, recently completed the construction of a lakeside trail along Wenqian Road in Niaosong District, creating a 1.4-kilometer-long, 2-meter-wide dedicated pedestrian path. Safety railings have been installed and the road surface resurfaced, enabling residents and visitors to safely stroll along the lakeshore and laying the foundation for a future fully connected lakeside recreational network.
Chengcing Lake’s walking network gets an upgrade! The 1.4-kilometer lakeside trail on Wenqian Road in Niaosong is now open, making sunset walks safer and more enjoyable.
According to a press release from the Kaohsiung City Government’s Public Works Bureau, Wenqian Road (County Highway No. 57) in Niaosong District is adjacent to one of Chengcing Lake’s Eight Views, 'Satinglan Victory,' and the under-construction National Museum of Prehistory. It also serves as a key commuting route for residents of Niaosong and Renwu districts. Previously, some sections lacked proper pedestrian space, forcing walkers to share the road shoulder with vehicles.
To improve safety, the Road Maintenance Engineering Office collaborated with the Transportation Bureau, Parks Department, and Waterworks Bureau to implement cross-departmental improvements:
• Dedicated pedestrian path: A 1.4-kilometer, 2-meter-wide solid walkway built along the lakeshore, with added safety railings • Improved road smoothness: Road surface milling and repaving, along with re-marking of lane lines, completed from the West Bank Road to Mengli West Lane, enhancing traffic safety • Landscape and safety benefits: Provides a bright, safe walking environment, connecting tourist attractions with surrounding residential areas
Director Yang Chin-fu of the Public Works Bureau stated that since the city government took over management of the Chengcing Lake Scenic Area and established the Kaohsiung Gorling Natural Park, it has progressively improved the surrounding pedestrian environment, including the West Bank Road, lakeside trails, Songyi Road, Bade South Road, and Dapi Road. The completion of the eastern Wenqian Road trail further expands the friendly walking zone around Chengcing Lake.

MRT Yellow Line and water conservancy projects underway—future integration of green corridors and public transport
Local resident Mr. Li said that previously, when going to the scenic area for exercise, he had to walk tightly along the roadside. With the new pedestrian path completed, the quality of evening lakeside strolls and sunset viewing has significantly improved. "I often walk to the Chengcing Lake scenic area for exercise. Before, I had to walk along the roadside from home. Now that the sidewalk is built, it’s bright and safe. Pausing by the lake in the evening to enjoy the sunset feels truly refreshing and relaxing."
The Road Maintenance Engineering Office explained that the overall road network planning around Chengcing Lake will be completed in phases:
• Current progress: The 1.4-kilometer lakeside trail on Wenqian Road and road surface renewal have been completed and opened. • Ongoing projects: The Water Resources Bureau’s 'lakeside water-friendly trail' and the MRT Yellow Line construction are still underway. • Future outlook: As related projects are completed, the integration of mountain-water green belts, walking spaces, and public transportation systems will create a larger-scale urban oasis.
The Public Works Bureau reminds the public that other construction works are still ongoing in nearby areas. When passing through construction zones, please pay attention to traffic control measures and warning signs, and slow down to ensure safety.
Is Kaohsiung’s Chengcing Lake worth visiting? Tourist reviews: Scenic views everywhere, definitely returning next time
Chengcing Lake in Kaohsiung is often praised as 'Taiwan’s West Lake.' Originally an irrigation pond for the Cao Gong Canal, it is Kaohsiung’s largest lake, famous for its 'Three Bridges,' 'Six Victories,' and 'Eight Views.' The 230-meter-long 'Nine-turn Bridge' is Chengcing Lake’s most iconic landmark. Walking across offers multiple angles to enjoy the lake and mountain scenery, earning it the title of 'Moon Fishing at the Curved Bridge,' one of the Eight Views. 'Zhongxing Tower' is a seven-story octagonal spire tower; from the top, visitors can overlook the entire lake and the skyline of Kaohsiung City. The lake area spans over 300 hectares, hosting a rich variety of plant and birdlife. The lakeside trail is flat and easy to walk, ideal for morning or evening strolls, jogging, or cycling. The park is currently free to enter, with only vehicles charged a parking fee. Visitors can combine their trip with the nearby Kaohsiung Grand Hotel to admire classical palace architecture, walk along scenic wooden boardwalks, visit Chengcing Lake Baseball Stadium, or head to the nearby Wenshan Special District for dining, creating a rich one-day itinerary in Kaohsiung.
Tourist reviews include: "Walked across the Nine-turn Bridge—photos didn’t quite capture the beauty of the curves; a higher angle might look better. The weather was great, and the lake water was a beautiful blue-green color." "Chengcing Lake is a great place for mental and physical healing." "The lake and scenic area are huge, with residential buildings visible in the distance. I spent two hours exploring but only saw a small part. Entering the lakeside via the curved bridge, every spot was scenic. Sitting down to watch ducks sunbathing and breathing in fresh air was truly refreshing.
