While Taiwanese people traveling to Japan is no longer news, which region is the most attractive? According to the latest statistics from the Japanese government, Hokkaido experienced a tourism boom in 2025, with a total of 46.5 million overnight visitors, a 4.2% increase from 2024 and a new record since statistics began in 2007. In this tourism boom, the growth of foreign tourists was particularly remarkable, with approximately 13.3 million foreign overnight visitors in 2025, a 29% increase from 2024, also setting a new record, demonstrating the strong appeal of the region to international tourists.
Among tourists by country and region, Taiwanese tourists ranked first with approximately 2.4 million visits, becoming the largest source of foreign overnight visitors in Hokkaido. South Korea followed closely with approximately 2.37 million visits, ranking second, while Chinese tourists ranked third with nearly 200 million visits.
The Hokkaido Transportation Bureau analyzed that the outstanding performance of Taiwanese and South Korean tourists was mainly due to the fact that international scheduled flights between the two regions and Hokkaido have fully recovered to pre-pandemic levels. With the full recovery of routes and improved transportation convenience, along with the appeal of the region's distinct four seasons and cuisine, Hokkaido continues to be a top choice for Taiwanese tourists traveling to Japan for vacations.
