The show invited Takashi Aii, a Level 1 Tea Master from Japan’s renowned brand 'Itoen,' who officially named this hole the 'air vent.' Its primary function, he explained, is to balance the internal and external air pressure of the teapot.
When you tilt a teapot to pour tea, if there is no air vent, the outflow of tea reduces internal pressure. The external atmospheric pressure then pushes back against the tea, causing it to get stuck or spurt out intermittently with a 'glug-glug' sound. Only when outside air smoothly enters through the vent can internal and external pressures balance, allowing tea to flow in a steady, uninterrupted stream.

The show conducted a controlled experiment, comparing tea brewed with the 'vent facing the spout' versus 'vent facing the back (opposite side)' under identical conditions of water volume, tea quantity, and steeping time. The results showed that tea brewed with the vent aligned toward the spout was noticeably darker in color and richer in aroma.
