3. Thin Flip-Flops and Sandals Lacking Arch Support
The third category includes flip-flops commonly worn daily during summer. Wearing flip-flops to convenience stores, pools, or beaches doesn’t inherently harm feet. The real issue arises when thin, unsupportive sandals are used as primary walking shoes for extended distances.
Podiatrist Dr. Joy Rowland emphasizes that “support” is a critical factor when choosing sandals or flip-flops. Shoes should offer arch support and a structured heel cup to stabilize the foot. An overly thin sole provides minimal protection against sharp objects like stones or glass.
Cleveland Clinic’s medically reviewed plantar fasciitis resource further identifies footwear lacking sufficient foot support—such as flip-flops or flat, highly flexible sneakers—as a risk factor for plantar fasciitis. For those already suffering from plantar fasciitis, Cleveland Clinic advises wearing sturdy, cushioned shoes with built-in arch support and avoiding flat, unsupported sandals.
4. Overly Soft Shoes Lacking Structural Support
The idea that “softer shoes mean more comfort and better health” is a common misconception.
Dr. Joy Rowland explains that overly soft or poorly supported shoes may lead to knee instability and even lower back pain. She recommends everyday footwear to be not only comfortable but also feature a firm heel counter, solid arch support, and ample toe box space.
