Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced on the evening of August 30 that it had launched a combined ballistic missile and drone attack on two US-operated air bases in Jordan, in retaliation for a US strike on Iranian facilities near Larak Island in the Strait of Hormuz. The attack occurred hours after US forces targeted Iranian units preparing to deploy naval mines into the Strait of Hormuz, reigniting direct military confrontation between Washington and Tehran and ending a month of relative calm.

The IRGC stated that this operation, codenamed 'Punish the Aggressors,' targeted the King Hussein Air Base and Al-Azraq Air Base in Jordan. Iranian state media claimed that ballistic missiles struck technical maintenance facilities and fighter aircraft parking areas at both bases, causing 'significant damage.'

US officials confirmed to CNN that Iran had launched a retaliatory attack, stating that all missiles fired toward Jordan had been intercepted, with no reports of impacts. US sources familiar with the situation told Fox News that nearly all incoming missiles were intercepted, with no major consequences. The Jordanian Armed Forces told Al Jazeera that they successfully intercepted and destroyed all eight missiles entering Jordanian airspace.

The IRGC's assessment of the attack's outcome sharply contrasts with US claims. The group warned that any further attacks would trigger even more destructive responses. According to Iran's state-run Press TV, the IRGC emphasized that 'every strike will be met with a more destructive retaliation.'

The retaliatory strike came hours after US forces destroyed two Iranian launch systems on Larak Island, located near the northern entrance of the Strait of Hormuz. Captain Tim Hawkins, spokesperson for US Central Command, said US forces had observed IRGC units preparing to launch rockets carrying naval mines into the Strait. He stated that US forces were closely monitoring the area and stood ready to protect the free passage of commercial shipping through this vital waterway.

This marks the first time since July 29 that the US has publicly acknowledged conducting an attack on Iranian targets, ending a month-long pause in direct military actions. During this period, the Trump administration had gradually shifted toward imposing severe economic pressure on Tehran. Iranian officials immediately vowed a strong military response. Ebrahim Azizi, chairman of Iran's parliamentary National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, warned Washington that retaliation was imminent, stating, 'Try our will again, and you will pay a heavier price. Retaliation is coming—run!'

President Trump emphasized a 'zero tolerance' policy toward any new mine-laying in the Strait of Hormuz. IRGC spokesman Hossein Mohebi labeled the US attack a 'strategic fatal mistake' by the Trump administration, warning of 'serious consequences' on both military and economic fronts.

Prior to the Larak Island strike, President Trump had explicitly warned that the US would destroy any Iranian vessel attempting to re-lay mines in the Strait of Hormuz. Last week, US Central Command announced that mines had been cleared from international shipping lanes in the waterway. On August 25, Trump stated, 'Iran has been told that any vessel or boat placing new mines will be immediately and systematically destroyed,' stressing a 'zero tolerance' policy on new mine deployment.

The latest exchange of fire has once again placed US forces in Jordan at the center of military confrontation with Tehran. On July 17, an Iranian ballistic missile attack on Jordan's Muwaffaq Salti Air Base killed three US Army soldiers, triggering a new wave of US retaliatory operations. At the time, Trump warned that Tehran would pay 'many times over' for each fallen American soldier.

The US continues to exert heavy economic pressure on Tehran. Fighting continued into late July, with US Central Command describing a 'fierce wave of attacks' on IRGC targets on July 29—the last publicly acknowledged US strike on Iranian targets before August 30. On August 1, President Trump announced a temporary suspension of further strikes, following mediation by Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates, while the administration shifted focus to intensifying economic pressure, though military options remained on the table.
