Ma De Espionage Case Reaches Taiwan's Ministry of Health and Welfare! Female Researcher Faces 12-Year Sentence for Leaking Classified Documents, Earning 'NT$5,000 per Month'

The espionage case involving former CTI News anchor Ma De (Lin Chen-you) has taken a new turn, with the Qiaotou District Prosecutors Office uncovering that a contracted deputy researcher at Taiwan's Ministry of Health and Welfare (MOHW) allegedly leaked classified documents to an overseas hostile entity. The researcher, identified as Ms. Lin, has been indicted, and prosecutors are seeking a 12-year prison sentence.

According to the indictment, Ms. Lin began communicating online with a member of an overseas hostile group known as 'Mr. Zeng' in May of last year. In June, she was hired as a contracted deputy researcher at the MOHW's Protection Services Division, where she handled government subsidy programs for local municipalities.

During the investigation into Ma De's espionage charges, prosecutors discovered that Ms. Lin had agreed with 'Mr. Zeng' to receive NT$5,000 per month in exchange for completing specific tasks, including providing a list of Taiwanese journalists, facilitating money transfers, and gathering damaging information on the government. Some of these payments were made through Ma De's bank account.

Prosecutors further found that 'Mr. Zeng' instructed Ms. Lin to receive funds from the hostile group through third-party accounts and then transfer them to designated accounts. These funds were allegedly used as bribes for two military personnel, identified as Jiang and Hong, to perform acts in violation of their duties, thereby concealing the illicit origin of the funds.

Additionally, on March 10 this year, Ms. Lin is suspected of using her smartphone to photograph classified documents from the Nantou County Government and the MOHW, then transmitting them via a messaging app to 'Mr. Zeng' in exchange for payment.

Prosecutors have charged Ms. Lin with violations of the Anti-Corruption Act, Money Laundering Control Act, and National Security Act. The case will be tried under the Citizen Judges Act. Given the number and sensitivity of the leaked documents, prosecutors are urging the court to impose a heavy sentence of 12 years.
